$20 trick at Golden Nugget

Has anyone tried the $20 trick at the Golden Nugget lately and did it work? Also any suggestions on what time of day to try this?
I did this about 8 months ago (actually with only $ 10.00) for 1 night and the representative was very pleasant and helpful and gave us comps for any buffet, not just breakfast. Also offered room update but I wanted closest to casino so I did not take the room update,
I have tried several times and was told by all clerks that they were not allowed to accept these gratuities. In fact, they were told they could loose their job if they were caught doing so. (The last time I tried was mid July 2012). None-the-less, it is worthy of trying.
I am just curious...if you got 5 responses saying it works, and 5 saying it dosn't...do you try it or not? Just do it. it either will or won't work. I don't know why, and nothing personal, but I am always amazed at these types of questions....It's as if you need some kind of "OK" to do this. Just try it!

The truth of the matter is that if caught accepting money at the check in desk for a favor at almost all if not All properties will get the clerk fired . It is a selfish stunt to do the $20 or $100 tip trick when checking in . Just be pleasant and of good humor and one can still get upgrades.
jazzlover has the best answer. I know of two cases where employees were fired because of accepting money or just in plain words a bribe. I say it is very stupid to put your job on the line for $20 bill. In one of two cases I know about (first hand) the clerk was actually selling upgrades and that is not a smart thing to even attempt. Just be sugar and spice and everything nice and don't put the carrot out there for someone to lose their job.
Years ago, yes I'M getting old. The $20 trick always worked and we used it at least twice a year and always had success. After having much resistance in 2009-10 we quit trying the $20 trick. This is another reason Vegas has taken away the spontinaity and fun that made it great. Profit has become the only motivator. Someday economic factors will force them to offer cheap food and good deals once again.
i want to thank the board for $ 20 idea. I was at a convention at hotel with a 11 AM check out and I understood as many rooms to clean. but weather very wet and ferry left at 5 pm so not great afternoon to look forward to. The 20 trick opened doors 400pm check out!! This was in Victoria Canada not many ferries in Las Vegas
I have always used the 20.00 trick, last time at Paris and got a suite..
I have a problem with offering someone $20.00 to steal from their employer. Never did it - never will!
