Down town observations- The D

Just got back last night from a weeks stay on Fremont Street. I read a lot of posts and go to recommended placess and stay away from non recommended areas,so I thought i would throw my two cents in maybe saving someone some money or unwanted drama on their Vegas trip.
I found the price for a room at the D was good ($39 a night), but I kept reading about loud music and renovations on going at the D so I booked at the Golden Nugget.
I went to the D mutiple times during the week and found the following.
#1 The renovations are 95% done
#2 The renovations done at the D, are way better than the renovations done at the Plaza (IMHO). I think they were trying to copy the Planet Hollywood decore/vibe and I think they hit it on the head!
#3 The coney island hot dogs are the best on Fremont Street. The casings 'snap' when you bite into them!
#4 The entire upstairs of the D are vintage coin machines. It was kind of neat running around with a bucket of quarters on Fremont street again. There was a nice bar and sports book also on the second floor.
#5 Huge bar on the main floor. I was told it was the biggest in Las Vegas. 4 big screen tv's, and a guy flipping wiskey bottles over his shoulders while he is serving you.
#6 We took a tour of the rooms on the 32 floor. Nice and clean, modern decore. Still small...but for $39 a night its a very good value.
#7 When you look at the outside of the D, the entire building is covered with a sheet of something (screen) advertising the D, When we tried to look out the window of the room the screen screwed up the view and infact made me a little dizzy looking through it. Not a deal breaker for me
#8 The much talked about music was fine during the day but at night and during certain songs, it got loud. The entire casino was packed with people young and old so I dont think the music was an issue for anyone. If loud music bothers you at home, dont rent here.
#9 10x odds on the craps tables.
I contacted a host at the D and will probably book here on my next trip.

The D's renovation has really got me thinking of staying over. I've played there on two past trips and had good luck on their machines. It's a nice cozy casino, not over whelming like those mega resorts. It's easy to check out the machines and tables and pick the ones to your liking. My next trip is in March and I'll be playing there. I may stay there on my next trip, especially if I get some good offers from them.
Hey Weggie,

Good to hear some updates about the "D"...I usually stay there at least once or twice a yr. Haven't been there since March 2012...everything that you mentioned is good to know...I kind of thought that someone on this forum mentioned recently that upstairs had some ticket in/out machines also. Did you happen to see a progressive 25 cents poker machine bank either up or down stairs? It has about 8 chairs. Before there was a bank downstairs by the hotel lobby/checkin and another one upstairs in front of the sportsbook area.

Did you get to eat in the "new" coffee shop? Used to go there when it was the courtyard grill, but heard that now it is the "D" grill....

Btw,,was just wondering which host have you contacted...seems like there was only 1 host left named Larry when we were there last year...all the others had left...wondering who should we contact when we go on our next trip in Nov '13?

tamashir, I did not look that close at the coin in machines up stairs as I am a craps player who dabbles with video poker when I need a break from craps. I did see progressive wheel of fourtune, the really old horse racing machine, slant top video poker, everything that I needed was there.

As far as the new coffee shop where the courtyard grill was. I did see it but did not stop in. The area has changed and looks much cleaner.

thank you for this update. You make staying at The D sound very attractive. I now what to try it!
We just got back stayed downtown 2 out of 7 days at GN. Yes definatly changes at the D . Was pretty loud at the slots close to the bar area. I think a little louder than PH. But I can live with that the part about the D I dont like is the temperature . Turn the frickin heat down it was cookin in there. Other than that I like it.
Thanks Weggie44

Will be there in Nov to check it out.....

GamblingDan: They're Vegas-ites...to them, 55 degrees is cold! =) I'm in Michigan where we're supposed to be at 40 degrees today and people are dressed like it's Spring! =D
I hear you, I'm a northerner and today feels balmy

Yes, I agree! I'm a Southern Californian and since we have a warmer climate, for me, T-Shirt weather begins at 75 Degrees!

Below 70 Degrees I want some thicker clothes and we're freezing when it's in the 40's or 50's.

Don't think that I take this for granted, because I know that I'm fortunate to live in a warmer climate!
