Downtown--Disappointment

With the summer heat and the lack of pools downtown our most recent trip we stayed on the strip but spent one night downtown. We were sadly disappointed. The vibe of downtown has gotten just out and out trashy. Between the stupid people dressed up in costume (some just nasty), the crowds, and panhandlers is was hard to enjoy what used to be an enjoyable place. Downtown has tried to cram to much to Fremont St. While the new bars and clubs are great, the added vendors to under the canopy has become just to much. They are trying to hard to make to more like the strip instead of creating something unique. It is a sad change and with fewer casinos offering good pay tables, I am seeing less and less to draw me downtown.

I agree with this but I doubt it will affect my decision to stay at the Four Queens or the MSS. I just avoid venturing out there at night because I also find it disgusting. When I'm at the FQ, I might make the short trip at night to the Nugget for Starbucks but that's it. During the day, I might look around a bit more but I've stayed there three nights before without stepping onto Fremont St. one time. Of course, MSS does not have this issue due to its location.

We like to head to The California or Main Street Station to find a little bit of "calm" in the craziness of the new Fremont Street. I agree that it's gotten kinda nuts in the last few years. (I REALLY don't like to see big breasted women with pasties parading around but that's just me.) That being said.... I really like to stay downtown or off strip. I feel that we get a better "money in" for our "money out."
You are spot-on with the comment about Fremont Street under the cover being too crammed with almost everything under the sun(or perhaps the canopy). I will be going out in September and while I stay downtown(MSS), I hardly ever visit Fremont at night. Give me more open spaces.

I wouldn't mind seeing an ordinance against the costumed people.

I try and cut alot of slack for downtown. They were on the verge of shutting down everything. Its nice to see the area come back alive even if I dont like everything about the way its been done.

When the low limit games, loose machines, and cheap eats dry up (and they slowly are) then I'll take a more negative view on it.
I couldn't believe all of the people last weekend that were out there at night with little children. Are people so dense that they think this behavior is appropriate for children? I agree that pjstroh that I don't mind the crowds if it helps the downtown economy. I had a comp for the new BBQ place at Binions and the walk from the FQ to Binions on a Saturday night was annoying due to the crowds. I'm just not a big fan of dodging people when I walking.
Yeah, I'm pretty shocked at the amount of very young (stroller) kids down there at midnight on Friday and Saturday. Parents getting hammered and just in the way. I don't see this bringing in any revenue to downtown, just bringing down the overall feel of the place.

And yes, the costume thing has also gotten out of hand.

The nightlife of Fremont Street is more now of an obstacle than the entertaining stroll it was a few years ago.

Obstacle is an excellent way to phrase it. You can stroll during the day but that's about it.

Fortunately there are lots others that enjoy big crowds. The outdoor Concerts are enjoyed by many also.
