Downtown Grand

As locals we stopped to check out the new Downtown Grand. We were in the area as we had a coupon for $30 off at 777 brewpub that would expire on the 31st. After eating a fine dinner at the pub we walked down Stewart st. to the Grand. It was still light out thankfully. I'm not sure I would feel totally safe walking there after dark. While waiting for a light to change we were accosted by someone looking for spare change.

We found the grand to be well done, well designed, nicely decorated, all the newest slots etc. I was surprised to see that they have a separate baccarat room that was empty with a few dealers hanging around. Seems to me that baccarat is not a low roller game and would not be a great fit downtown but what do I know?

One very annoying thing to me is that a big slice of the screen on almost all the machines is devoted to advertising various restaurants etc. This forces the game graphics to scrunch up and distort. The Boyd properties have recently implemented this but theirs happens when you put your club card in. The screen then distorts the game you are playing and your points etc. show in the bottom part of the screen. I've seen the advertising screen thing at the Wynn too at the top but they at least have an option to turn it off.

Didn't try any of the restaurants at the Grand but they looked nice. The casino was pretty busy. We exited out the other side and walked one block over to Fremont St. OMG, forgot it was Halloween. Can you say PACKED? A band on every stage, some in costume.

What a zoo and what wild costumes. Male and female butt cheeks made up and hanging out...Really?? And the people who bring their young children? What were they thinking?
OK, for one who only goes downtown to eat at the Flame, where is the Grand, or what was it before? Advertising on the machine screen-terrible.
I guess I just saw it was Lady Luck. I didn't think they were going to open for a while.
Yes it is open, I just got back from a trip last night.
Walked down Fremont 3 times before looking down far enuf to see The Downtown Grand, walked down to it and was very impressed with the Property. I spent half my trip downtown and they were busy for each visit I did during my last 3 days there. I knew it was there, I knew it was the Grand Opening and still walked by it on Fremont, I'm afraid newbies will miss it completely.

I checked out the casino this past Friday. The place looks very unassuming from the outside; far from glamourous. The inside, however, is very nice. The casino floor is on the smallish side; not a lot of gaming tables. There was only 3 BJ tables open when I was there late Friday afternoon. Sat down and played for 90 minutes at a $5 six deck shoe game. H17, 3:2 BJ payout. The dealers were talkative and friendly. Cocktail service was excellent. The VP paytables are disappointling for a downtown property. Favorable first overall impression of the place, but it didn't "WOW" me.

Glasses can affect your vision; especially when they have been emptied several times........

Spring Break 2000 !!!
I get the feeling that, just like the build ups for the Plaza and the "D", once again it will be much ado about nothing. I had hoped to be wrong with my initial thoughts about the re branding of the old Lady Luck but corporate greed is still the bottom line.
Was in there twice last week both times was in the morning 11am. More help than customers---card services opens at 10am Sun---Thurs----8am ---Fri-----Sat.(you can get a card at the cashiers cage earlier)----very small---not busy---nice and clean (because it new) drink service very good----just as in the past going to be very hard to pull people from Fremnet Street down to the Downtown Grand.....
Perhaps improving their abysmal video poker schedules might get more people in the door.
Do they have any good freebies for signing up for the slotclub?

Well El Cortez does have Mini-Baccarat with a $5 minimum bet, so there is something involving Baccarat in Downtown.

But for me, 6 Deck Blackjack with the Dealer Hitting on Soft 17 is not a game that I would play since I do have El Cortez with Single Deck as a better option.

It would be good if they (like Lady Luck before it) had at least some not bad Video Poker.
