As locals we stopped to check out the new Downtown Grand. We were in the area as we had a coupon for $30 off at 777 brewpub that would expire on the 31st. After eating a fine dinner at the pub we walked down Stewart st. to the Grand. It was still light out thankfully. I'm not sure I would feel totally safe walking there after dark. While waiting for a light to change we were accosted by someone looking for spare change.
We found the grand to be well done, well designed, nicely decorated, all the newest slots etc. I was surprised to see that they have a separate baccarat room that was empty with a few dealers hanging around. Seems to me that baccarat is not a low roller game and would not be a great fit downtown but what do I know?
One very annoying thing to me is that a big slice of the screen on almost all the machines is devoted to advertising various restaurants etc. This forces the game graphics to scrunch up and distort. The Boyd properties have recently implemented this but theirs happens when you put your club card in. The screen then distorts the game you are playing and your points etc. show in the bottom part of the screen. I've seen the advertising screen thing at the Wynn too at the top but they at least have an option to turn it off.
Didn't try any of the restaurants at the Grand but they looked nice. The casino was pretty busy. We exited out the other side and walked one block over to Fremont St. OMG, forgot it was Halloween. Can you say PACKED? A band on every stage, some in costume.
What a zoo and what wild costumes. Male and female butt cheeks made up and hanging out...Really?? And the people who bring their young children? What were they thinking?
