Downtown Hotel Rankings

Hubby and I travel to Vegas every couple of years. We are going again this December 14-18. Usually we travel with friends but this time it will be just the two of us so we have decided to split our time - two nights downtown and two nights upscale (i.e. Venetian, Bellagio, etc...). We have already stayed at Plaza (pre-renovations) and Main Street Station so I already know logistically what those hotels are like. MY QUESTION IS: if you've stayed at multiple properties downtown, which rooms were your favorites? We actually would be ok with a view of Fremont Street (noise and all).
Our favorite is Main Street but have stayed at most all downtown properties - we return to Boyd properties because of the offers. We are looking forward to the new Downtown Grand (Lady Luck) opening - it looks great in pictures and you might want to check it out.
My vote would be:
1. Main Street
2. Golden Nugget!
I like Plaza and Four Queens, but Plaza has now added a $10 (Plus Tax I think) nightly Resort Fee (unless you are comped there) and they have made at least most of their Video Poker go bad with their "new" Slot Club.

I did not care much for Fremont or Golden Gate and Las Vegas Club rooms are now unavailable.

You're traveling at a very inexpensive time of year. Might want to consider one of the wild Designer Suites at El Cortez, you may be able to snag one at a very low price.

Talk to pjstroh, he seems to know them well.
I just got back from 3nights at the El Cortez. I don't know how it happened, but they gave me one of those designer suites. It was pretty amazing. I don't count on ever getting one of them again. They had put me in one of their regular jacuzzi suites before, but never one of the designer suites. Maybe because it's mid-week in August...

It was a great room, but since I travel there alone, it was kind of wasted. I would not pay for one, since their regular tower rooms meet my needs just fine.

Thats awesome if they comped you one. Good score. However, the default weekday price for one is typically in the $175/night area. There are better rooms downtown for that price at Golden Nugget and the new "D" suites.

I'm very partial to El Co because it has arguably the most player friendly games downtown coupled with a generous rewards program and good restaurants to spend your comps at. Plus the parking garage is always free and easily accessible. Some of the downtown parking garages are a nightmare where you have to spin through 4 laps up the garage before you get past the valet area (4 Queens, Fitz).

But back to the poster's question: Keep your eye on the new Downtown Grand that is due to open later this year (perhaps in time for your trip). Those rooms are looking pretty nice - especially the suites.
thanks for the input. since it is still early enough i think i will wait and see what downtown grand will have to offer.

I know that is why we are springing for a strip suite for the second half of our trip. Otherwise we would not be staying on the strip at all
