Downtown Poker

Can someone give me some advice on where the best places to play poker are downtown? I'm taking a nephew for his first visit and I'm hoping that we can find a low stakes table somewhere that he can play for a while at.
There's not much to choose from downtown. The El Cortez has a small room for small stakes. Binion's, of course, is where they used to play the WSOP and that gives it some credibility. They moved rooms a couple of years ago - it's smaller but more modern now. These days the Golden Nugget's room is the biggest and probably the nicest.

As always, for more details check out allvegaspoker.com.
I'm not a poker player, but I think Fitzgeralds has a small room up on their second floor near the keno. I would think they would be low stakes.

Gone as of last week.

Nugget poker room is most like the good strip ones. Binions for the nostalgia
El Cortez. Haven't played there in a few years, but when I did Jackie would come down and play in the evenings. Games were low stakes and not the Internet generation.

Binions has a Saturday and Sunday game with a $100 buy in that has a $5000 garenteed pool! It starts at 1 or 2 in the afternoon and I have been knocked out as late as 7 PM, so be prepared to stay for a while(if all goes well)

Binions almost always has low limit and $1-$2 NLHE games going. The Nugget room is smaller, and my experience is that the games play deeper there. Doesn't mean they're necessarily better players, but at the GN I've seen a lot of guys buy in for $1K at a 1-2 table and try to bully everybody with $20 pre-flop raises.

I've never played at El Co, but plan to my next trip (March Madness). It's only like two tables in the middle of the casino playing spread limit (1-5?), but I've heard it's a lot of fun.

With the demise of the Fitz, those are your only 3 poker choices downtown. You might consider heading to Bill's on the strip for .50/$1 NLHE. Lotsa bad players there, and they look at you funny if you buy in for more than $100.

And group, don't forget about the Golden Nugget coupon for $60 in Poker Chips For $50 that's in the American Casino Guide.

What's wrong with the Fitz? I'm coming to Las Vegas in June and am staying at the Fitz. Their website says they have a couple of poker tournaments a day.
