Downtown Suggestions

Never been downtown Vegas but will spend a few days around the 4th of July. Any advice on eating. gaming, drinking and other fun things to do will be appreciated.

Eating and drinking options are plentiful, good, and reasonably priced in Fremont East Entertainment district.  Just walk east from the canopy, and once you cross LV blvd, you're in the District.  A favorite restaurant of mine is Carson Kitchen.  The best gambling odds tend to be at El Cortez, which is the East Entertainment district.  It should be noted that eating and drinking under the canopy is not a bargain any longer, although there are a few places that are reasonable.  Magnolia's and Chicago Brewing Company in the 4 Queens comes to mind.

Under the canopy, while not great odds, I enjoy gambling at the small Golden Gate.  It's immediately across the street from the new Circa Casino and Hotel.  It's the oldest hotel casino in Las Vegas.  In the early 1900's, Golden Gate got the first phone number in Nevada, and that number was literally "1".

If you like sports books, make sure to hit Circa.....pretty cool place.

When my friends come to town, we have a nice dinner (either at Binions Steakhouse or Hugo's Celler) and then go to the Golden Gate for blackjack. We take over an entire table and he BJs pay 3/2. Friendly dealers.

Downtown Grand ( a block or so north of the main casino row) is offering some visitor friendly pricing and bargains recently. Fine dining includes $2 for a hot dog and a PBR. You might check that option out and use the DG  LVA match bet coupon for the property if applicable for you.

I agree with the 4Q comments.   Drinks are expensive everywhere.   If you drink beer I recommend buying one outside then have someone hold your cup while you go into a convenience store for the next one.  Just poor it it the cup.  The live music and people watching are great at night under the canopy.  I found Fremont East a little sketchy after dark and even at 8AM while walking to Siegal's for breakfast.   Siegal's also has dinner specials and will take the 2/1 LVA coupon.

I also thought the walk to the DT Grand was sketchy at night but I hear the work at the Fremont is finished now and the area is well lit.  The dealers are worth the visit to The D, Golden Gate and Circa.

Thanks everyone. Any preference betwween the Prime Rib at DT Grand vs El Cortez? Should try each but best only to try one.

flip of a coin----both ok

El Cortez wins the coin flip - you can always find some good blackjack before or after your meal...

Another coin flip - I love Pop Up Pizza at the Plaza. My wife prefers Pizza Rock.
