Downtown - Whats New?

In just over 5 weeks, Ill be taking my first trip back Downtown after a 2 year hiatus.
From what Ive kept up with, lots of things have changed.
Do you recommend anything that's a must see or do? Any cool new bars that are fun?

Already Planned:
Check out The Grand.
Play upstairs at the D.
Pizza Rock

What else?... and Slotzilla doesn't look fun to me..

marko..
Marko62, looks like we will be downtown about the same time. If you see a guy that looks suspiciously like the guy in my LVA icon, bellied up to a craps table, feel free to say hi!
I checked out the D the last time I was in Las Vegas, I even went to the check in area and asked to see a room. They gave me a key to a room on the 25th floor without hesitation (I think it was 25th floor) and my wife and I checked it out. The curtain that hangs over the entire building screwed up what little view there was, but at $30 a night I would not expect anything more than a clean room. I didn't think the music was loud enough to do all the whining that I see on these boards over, of course I was brought up in the 70's when we had real rock and roll!............ It will be interesting to hear your reviews.
I would kill to go on slotzilla but I violate the weight requirements by 15 pounds I am actively trying to get down to 250 pounds by the end of May so I can go on it.
Check out the downtown grand while your there. The casino is smallish, but very clean and all of the dealers are on there very best behavior.

Good luck while your there weggie

I took in the D right after it opened and was really impressed with the long bar, however - I too am one of those old farts (at the age of 35) that thought the music was really loud. Maybe its changed since then and Im going to take your advice and see if they will let me check out a room.
From the website, the Grand looks old school and classy. We will see.
Sadly, I think Im most excited to stay in the Plaza and check out the new rooms. That and the GG Shrimp.

Maybe we should schedule a LVA Member Meet for a cold one.

You will love the plaza "post renovations" ( I do!)
The Downtown Grand was really nice but I like being right on Fremont street
I will be at the Golden Gate Sunday May 25th then I move to the Fremont Monday the 26th and stay there until Saturday morning May 31th and will drink a beer (diet rum and coke) with you anytime except Friday night.... I am doing a meet and greet with the Nitty Gritty Dirt band at the Golden Nugget Friday night ($59-how could you go wrong???)

weggie

Crap.. We are there the first weekend in June.
Any other new FSE bars worth checking out?
I enjoyed Vanguard (before 10 & it got crowded with hipsters) and also had fun at Insert Coins.
Was not impressed with Hogs n Heffers. Too expensive for a Downtown bar.

Marko..
You may want to check out the Mob Museum.Nice way to spend a couple of hours.

Good Call on that.. And I know its not downtown, but have you done the CSI Experience? I was a huge fan of the show and few years ago and it looks like fun.

marko..
Check out the Contatiner Park rigtht across from El Cortez. Stores, easteries, live music. Nice way to spend an hour. Check out the restaurant "EAT" on the south end of the container park....its a breakfast place. Arguably the best breakfast downtown.
I forgot about Container Park. Have heard good things. And if you saw Anthony Bourdains CNN show this week, he was in Vegas & they had a scene at Eat.
The "new" Plaza is definitly worth a look. I too am an old fart (57) and I agree, the music at the D is LOUD (and pounding), especially over the Paigow tables! But its worth the visit. Didn't make it to the Grand nor the Container park so I cant speak on either! However I did make my first ever venture inside the Heart Attack grill but I couldn't get myself to go thru with putting on the gown and ordering something unhealthy!
