First Time Staying Downtown

We visited downtown once a few years ago. This December we have booked 4 nights at the Golden Nugget.
I see that the Nugget doesn't have full-pay video poker so we'll probably play that at the Four Queens. Also read that the Nugget shows are quite good so we'll try them. Any other must sees/must do's? Also, are there any good buffets downtown? Thanks for any tips.

Freemont has a fairly good seafood buffet, I think three nights a week. Main Street stations buffet is okay.

Golden Nugget buffet is severely overpriced.

Video poker you will find some positive at 4 Queens, MST, Cal, Vegas Club and El Cortez.

Not sure about the Plaza since it reopend but will be spending time there in December.

Hope you enjoy downtown. I used to avoid it like the plague now it is my choice for stay and play and avoid the strip like the plague.

And yes, there is definitely better Video Poker in Downtown than on the Strip.

I think that the listing at VPFree2.com for Plaza is accurate.

I think that California also has some okay stuff.

Do check into the New Member's promotion for Las Vegas Club. It's quite decent!

I think that you'll like staying in Downtown. I've been staying there for quite a while.

Well first off, welcome home, oh Prodigal Son of downtown. I actually stayed downtown for over a year before I even tried staying on the Strip. Every now and again, I'll take advantage of a really cheap room rate and pay my own way on the Strip, and either gamble elsewhere or not at all. But the vast majority of the time I'll stay downtown.

If you're there over the weekend or around the rodeo finals, you'll find multiple bands playing outside every night and with extremely rare exception, the bands are good. Typically tribute bands or bands that cover 60s-80s hits, but good nonetheless. During the rodeo, they have some name acts playing.

As for buffets, it has been several years since I had the buffet at the GN. I think the buffets at MSS are a better value and if you use the coupon sheet link, you can probably get a 2-fer coupon. In general, I'd prefer to eat at a coffee shop or at 777 than at a buffet. In general, the buffets downtown aren't much different than a Golden Corral (or whatever casual dining buffet places there are in your part of the country) - definitely not up to the better buffets on the Strip.

If you haven't eaten at either the Flame at El Cortez or Hugo's at the Four Queens, I'd suggest one of them. The old-school gourmet rooms on the strip have largely been replaced with celebrity restaurants and when I go to Vegas, I want old school. I've eaten at both several times and have yet to have a bad meal. You can use your coupon from the MRB or ACG at the Flame and get out of there pretty cheap.

Take some time to grab a cup of coffee at the Starbucks at the Nugget (the one facing Fremont St), then go out on the patio and people-watch. I've found that the best time is shortly after one of the light shows. The patio will clear out shortly after the show, then you can have a good perch for people watching until the next show. It's a great and cheap one-hour timekiller.

And since you're there in December, even though it's not downtown, get down to the Bellagio for the Christmas exhibit in the conservatory. It's pretty amazing.

I would also suggest searching the whole downtown forum. Everything is fresh on here and a lot of topics are covered. This forum is barely 3 months old and is proving very popular and informative.
Thanks for the responses - some good info there.

- There aren't any great buffets downtown. MSS has a buffet that is good for the price on select "steak" nights. Fremont has a Seafood buffet that is pretty good (again select nights). None of them measure up to the high end buffets on the strip or out in locals land.

- The downtown diners offer some of the best food values in the city. California and Four Queens have great prime rib deals. Golden Gate has the famous $1.99 shrimp cocktail - and an awesome breakfast joint. MSS has a great brew pub.

- Many shows go dark in December so keep an eye out. Gordie Brown at Golden Nugget is good with half price tickets. Dont pay full price. Fitz of Laughter is a good show for the price.

- At night Fremont street offers a Holiday light show on the canopy...and Christmas Bands on the pavilion...and celebrity impersonators randomly walking around....and strippers dealing blackjack in the casinos. There is also a little frozen drink bar outside by GOlden Gate so you can get your drink on while you jimmy-jammy around..
I agree pretty much with everyone's views. About the only place that I would not play would be the Mermaids and the Gold Spike.

I went and checked out the Plaza a few weeks after they opened and their VP inventory was pretty sparse. The best I saw on JOB was 7/5 on quarters but the place is most definitely an improvement over the way it was before.

Hope you have a great time staying downtown.

VP Free still lists Golden Nugget having 8/5 Bonus Poker. We stayed there in 09 and played bonus poker there.
Thanks for all the info - heading there this week!
