Gold Spike Closing Party Review & Now What?

Did anybody stop by the Gold Spike closing party?

Now with it gone and the LVC closing the rooms, whats next for downtown?

Not that losing the GS or the VC rooms are that big of a deal, but it was a good low rollers joint (that tried for that sexy hotel feel.. again, tried). So will we start seeing bigger mega casinos take over?
Or is an upgrade or change long overdue at VC and can we expect a new spot at the GS before too long?

RIP Goldspike. I have no memory of being in the Spike but I know I've been in the Spike several times.
Next for downtown is presumably the Downtown Grand, built on the old Lady Luck site, which is due to open in six months or so. I haven't heard much chatter about who they intend to appeal to, but I assume they have some demographic in mind. We'll have to see.
I always hate to see a casino shut down, no matter how "dumpy" it may be. I appreciate spending time in some of the old time "joints". There are plenty of new, glitzy places to go but the old time places are dwindling. I'm heading to Vegas tomorrow and I'm sorry I missed the chance to attend.

I was there. We checked out the Gold Spike e very trip. The diner always had decent simple fare at very good prices and a smiling staff (and we go back to the greasy spoon era before they updated and actually cleaned the place).
The video poker and BJ were good. I did not like the fact that you had to get an employee to cash out- and judging by others reactions- I think that hurt them as much as anything else.
I was one of the last to play- while they were shutting other machines off- and actually had a pretty good run in the last few minutes. The employees were having a blowout at the bar and everything was on sale. They gave away some of the leftovers from the club (hats, t-shirts) and were spinning a prize wheel.

I'll miss them

Hey Radkad -
How was the crowd for the closing party? I saw a few pics online and it looked like a mix of locals/regulars and other folks just walking around to see what was going on.

Judging by those shots, it didnt seem like a huge group, but looked like the drinks were flowing..

You've pretty much got it right, lots of drinks at cut-rate prices and I think free for employees not working. Mostly locals. It was definately the busiest I'd ever seen it. Very few of us playing anything.
I went to Gold Spike the week that the casino had reopened and the Video Poker at that time was truly terrible!

Blackjack was not even open then. And so I truly had wondered how long they'd stay open.

The vp wasn't good but the bar staff and the employees I met were all friendly and interesting. When downtown I always walked there once or twice a day to have a drink and drop a couple $20s. Combine the employees with the errr "varied" customer base and this is a place I'll miss. I think the changes downtown have been mostly positive but I will miss taking friends to The Spike and The Western.

Ahhh... The Western.. I do miss that joint..
That was a must stop on every trip. My favorite was the "$3 Beer and a Shot" special. It was a bottle of Coors or Michelob and a shot of Sauza, Jack Daniels or Jack Daniels Honey.

I would order it, give the bartender a $5 and tell her to keep the change, she acted like I gave her a $500 tip. So, I assume tips did not come very often from the Western crowd.

That was a fun spot..
