gold spike-should I be scared???

We're staying at the Gold Spike for the first time. I couldn't resist the $30 charge for a Saturday night on Super Bowl weekend, so we're giving it a whirl. What are your thoughts about the rooms? What about the walk to the room....dangerous? How close is it to Fremont Street? Thanks for your thoughts!!
one of the best "bang for your buck" casino-hotels in vegas for room and food ---decent comps for players-
a short walk to the fremont street experience---
a 50/50 mix of local residents and tourists---
a low rollers paradise---

to be on the safe side:
do not venture outside when the sun goes down
put a chair up against your door handle when you nap
Stay there and you will like it, Jesus are you scared of the dark, this is now a very easy, bright casino to enter. Most parking ramps in rural Malls are more " scary " Bye the way I have stayed there 4 times since the remodel, and never felt more Welcome!

That's bad, unduly alarmist advice.

The area is completely safe, certainly as safe as areas outside the big strip resorts.

I only stay at the Spike when I'm solo, the small and spartan rooms don't provide the sort of atmosphere I'm after when I'm in Vegas with another.

But safety is a non-issue, it's as safe as tourist Vegas gets.

There are people who are antsy about walking from Fremont Street to Main Street Station, or from the FSE to the El Cortez after dark. Personally, I don't think there's any need to worry about it, although I have to add I'm rarely out after around 1:00 AM.

It seems to me there are enough well-lit bars along 4th Street now that you shouldn't have any worries. If push comes to shove, you could walk through the El Cortez, come out the back by the Seattle's Best and walk the block diagonal to the Spike.

If you're worried, walk around during the day and find a "safe" route back after dark, although again I don't think you have anything to worry about. You can always take the Richard Pryor approach and mutter stuff so that everyone thinks you're crazy and won't bother you.
Negative. You'll have a blast. Take plenty of pics- many great opportunities. Make sure you stroll down to the Western before it's gone for good.

Lots of good VP action at El Cortez . Use your Players card at all Downtown properties and you will get plenty of offers.

Walk up to Binions and have dinner at Binions Steakhouse. History, lots and lots of history.

Thanks so much for all the great replies!!! I'm looking very forward to a small casino with clean rooms, and from the sound of it....a safe walk to the casino at night!! yay!!
It's a tiny walk from Fremont Street ...... a small place.

One thing though, I think ALL the VP payouts are hand pays, no matter how small.

Not sure about the slots.

From what I've heard the rooms are clean but the beds are rock hard. I'd probably take a Vintage room at El Cortez over GoldSpike for about the same price with a high likelyhood of getting a free upgrade to the tower. But Gld Spike might be fun for a night or two. The casino is tiny - not somewhere you can really hang out for more than an hour - but El Cortex is right accross the street.

I was pleasantly surprised by the food quality of Gold Spike's Diner.
I stayed at the Spike for the first time earlier this year, and was pleasantly surprised. My room had been recently remodeled and was absolutely spotless. Not fancy at all, but very clean. My only complaint about the room was the blinds let a LOT of light in when I tried to sleep.

I never had a problem walking to and from Fremont Street. There were a few characters hanging around on the side streets, but not nearly as many as I saw right under the canopy. No different than anywhere else really...be aware of your surroundings, don't walk down the street counting your wad of $100 bills, don't look like you are scared to death, etc.
