gold spike-should I be scared???

It's a little off the beaten path, but a short walk to ElCortez and Fremont Street, well travelled, and in my opinion, perfectly safe if you stay aware of what's around. Casino is pretty small, and slots were all hand pays which can be a nuisance if you like to wander. The pool area was very inviting -- but won't be open in January, of course. I think the MRB on line has a really cheap room offer, and the coffee shop had a few specials as well. Very clean and the dealers were very happy to have company.
The area is very safe. I walked it last weekend
at about 11ish PM.

However, there can be "characters" roaming the area.

About 10 years ago I ran into a muscular, loud, tough-talking little (midget) person.

He was kind of scary.

Hey, I did not want to get punched in my knees.
I just checked tripres.com and rebooked my saturday night stay in february for $18!!! AND from what i've heard on this site, Gold Spike is a good place to lay my head for a few hours. Clean is important, other than that, the extra amenities some hotels offer are a waste on me. Thanks for the feedback!!
Good Luck Kohler, ....... and don't forget to give us a Trip Report after you get back.

Rick

I hit the Spike on every trip.. Never stayed (Im a creature of habit, its always the Plaza or GG for me), but I always enjoy my time there.

The bar can get a little "douchey" on the weekends (think lots of fat guys in Tap Out/UFC t-shirts and their drunk, loud, dramatic girlfriends), but the grill is great for a bite. The casino is clean, the tables are never too crowded and the cocktail service is swift..

One of these days Ill stay for a few nights..

Have fun and good luck!

marko..
Bring a eye mask for sleeping- too much light in the room. Cafe has decent food...
Playing there is alright, hanging out there is fun. I wouldn't want to leave my rental car in that parking lot of theirs though. The GS security never seems to walk through the lot at night.
Out of curiousity, I went back to tripres.com and noticed that the $18/night room I booked at Gold Spike for Super Bowl Saturday is not $209. Wow, just shows how planning ahead is crucial to Vegas. I'm planning to post a trip report to let you all know how Gold Spike held up....or didn't. But, based on the customer reviews on the travel websites, people tend to love the rooms and the casino. Bad reports about the parking though, but that doesn't bother me.....
Thanks for the update ......

Looking forward to your Trip Report.

I found the casino very small, especially with the Fremont Street casinos a 3 minute walk away.

........ didn't like the hand-pays for every cashout either.

I stayed there using the $7.77 MRB special and I think they have really, really clean up the place. I would say that the beds are super rock hard and like what many have said, it is very bright in the room. My only real complaint was that the elevators looked very used and needed some TLC. But, I am sure that have taken care of that. In general, I would say that the surrounding area is safe but use common sense.
