Golden Nugget...possible first time stayer

My husband and I are vacationing in Las Vegas this Spring. We're considering staying downtown for the first time...at the Golden Nugget. Any thoughts/suggestions regarding staying downtown, specifically at the Golden Nugget regarding room types (Rush Tower, Gold Tower or Carson Tower), restaurants, etc.? We've always stayed on the Strip and will do so for the majority of our trip, but thought two nights downtown would be nice for a change. Thank you for any info. :-)

I think you will like the GN. Which room you would like is dependent upon what is important to you and your budget. The Rush is brand new, modern decoration, slick, hip---and costs the most. The North Tower is right off of the casino, the rooms are nice and just a tad newer in terms of re-decorating than the South tower--it is usually less that Rush but more that the South (Carson) Tower. The South tower is on the south end of the property and is past the pool area, past the south Starbucks, to the elevators--it is usually least expensive. If anyone in your party has problems walking any distance, it could be a problem for you. To each his/her own, but I don't think you can go wrong. Now, personally, we always stay in the South Tower. We don't mind the walk, it is cheaper, it is super--I mean SUPER--quiet, far from the Fremont music and other sounds. We often wonder if we are the only ones on our floor. We are not super fond of the GN casino, although we do play some in there; but, you are a short walk from eight other casinos. Have a great time.
Stayed in a Carson tower room last year. It was comfortable, with a pool view. We were "strippies" for a long time, and spent one night at the Nugget 2 years ago, then the whole trip last year. I love the lower limits, the ability to walk across the street to another casino, and the nostalgia of the downtown. I like the casino there, but i can have fun anywhere I might get on a little streak. Get a Landrys card, and get a discount on your room, and $25 food credit too. Enjoy your trip.
We haven't stayed on the strip since the mid 1990's, when we "discovered" downtown. The GN is easily the class of the downtown hotels. Their basic rooms in the South or North Tower are as nice as any basic room on the Strip, at half the price or less. Check in at the main (North Tower) entrance is usually dreadfully slow, but last trip, we discovered that anyone can check in at the Rush Tower desk, with almost no waiting.

If you've never been downtown before, you need to know a few things. When you're not gambling or eating, there is precious little else to do. No shopping, except for a few souvenir shops. No shows to speak of. Not really much to see... there's the pool/aquarium at the GN, and the music/light shows on the Fremont Street canopy in the evening. Can't think of anything else. The GN has spa/salon facilities, and may be the only downtown hotel that does. If you like any of those kinds of amenities.

If it's better gambling (better rules and/or lower limits) that you're after, downtown is generally better than the Strip. But the off-strip "locals" casinos can be better yet, depending on what you're looking for.

We stayed in Gold Tower at Christmas - highly recommended!

There are some shows at Golden Nugget, Fitzgeralds and Four Queens. There is also now Mini-Golf at Swingers in Plaza, some arcade games at I think California (upstairs) and at the "Insert Coin(s)" Bar which is a block West of El Cortez Casino.

And as for what's on Fremont Street itself, besides the Viva Vision Light and Music shows (for more information on what's going on at the Fremont Street Experience, go to https://www.vegasexperience.com),, there is the Zip Line attraction and the Spray Paint artists at night as well as bands playing at night and possible photo opps with people dressed in character.

Also at the Golden Nugget, you can see the World's Largest (if I'm remembering correctly) Nugget of Gold.

There are also bars and Brewpubs for those interested in that kind of stuff!

And now I'm also remembering (if I'm understanding correctly) that there is stuff that happens sometimes in the new Fremont East District (which is just East of Las Vegas Boulevard) -- such as that Vegas StrEATS Festival.

Yes, most of the non-gambling things are on the Strip, but if you have a car, it's an easy drive to the Strip, as long as you drive the side roads. If you don't have a car, with the new Strip Downtown express bus, it's an easy bus ride.

If you are into shopping, the SDX will take you from Binion/Fremont pickup to Premiun Outlet Mall over on Bonneville in about 5min, and, of course, return you in similar time. We have walked it during the day, and takes about 15 min and it is not an upscale neighborhood until you cross under the underpass. I'm not a shopper, but wife likes that mall on occasion.
If you have a car, the south tower is the best as you are only minutes away from your car. I have always been a supporter of the downtown and the Golden Nugget. There is so much to do and see within minutes of the Golden Nugget.
GN is very nice. Recently I looked at the Rush Tower and thought it was the nicest option, but went with a Gold Tower room for less money. I liked the Gold Tower and recommend it as good value.

I was a cash customer, no comps, and got 10% off by showing my AARP card, you could get the same discount with AAA auto.

Get the LVA discount book, it has some good deals for downtown.

At GN if you are going to splurge, definitely go to Vic and Anthonys steakhouse.

It was a lot of fun for a two day visit. If you are definitely a "Strip" person, two days is enough.
