Help for a Downtown Newbie

Youtube has many reviews from mostly respectable posters of Vegas hotels. Including videos, tips and opinions. Just enter vegas downtown hotel reviews on the search and you'll see a good variety. I will be there mid Sept staying Tues - Thurs night. Weekends are too much for this old man anymore. I prefer the El Cortez or The Plaza. Get comps at the ElCo so I will be fine there for the trip. Not a craps player, but other table games are fair and service and staff is excellent. Siegels is a very good place for meals and your just a couple of blocks away if you want to walk to the FSE.

Thanks for all the advice. I found a pretty good deal on a rental car and I'm pondering the idea of having a car for my stay. This would let me go to other areas if I wanted without having to pay fior Ubers or dealing with public transportation. This would expand my possibilities of other non strip or downtown properties to visit and check out. Any thoughts on that? Waste of money or worth it for the ability to go places off the beaten path?

if you got a good deal go for it----

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I think I am going to stay at 4 Queens simply because I've heard so many good things both here and other places. No resort fee, free parking, and what sounds like a generous comp program. Three pretty important things on my list. Wish they had a pool, but it won't kill me to walk across to Binions or try to get my way into the pool at Golden Nugget. With a rental car I can explore in the mornings, and then settle in on Fremont for the afternoon and evening.

sounds like a good plan.  We always rent a car, but try to avoid the rush hour traffic times if you are new to the area.  And don't be afraid to ask the locals how to get in the back way of the places you want to go.

4Q is the best place to stay, best players club by far, comps easy to earn and some of the last decent video poker downtown. El Cortez, Plaza, 4Q best games overall and lowest limits.

Avoid ALL the Boyd properties. Everything that made them good for so long no longer applies. And the slot club pays you ZERO points!!!

Boyd is NOT a complete wasteland downtown.   There's at least one play at one property if you're willing to put in the time to find it....

...and that would be?

I think it is still fairly easy to get free rooms and some freeplay with Boyd and they have a few decent VP games left, also at MSS they have craps with 20X odds when they are open. Certainly not what it once was for sure.

Where ever "that" play is, Boyd will find it and remove it. Boyd used to be a favorite of mine, now they are not even on my list.

Last week The Fremont casino was only about half open with all the remodel going on still.  Curtains up everywhere.  As for Main Steet I have not seen a table game open there for over a year.  The Cal tables are busy and seem to be hot.  Just my observations  of 4 trips this year.
