The wife and i just spent four days at the El Cortez Cabana Suites. We made this choice because we wanted to stay downtown this trip and chose the Cabana Suites after reading everything the members had to say about the various hotels and rooms downtown. The comments were mostly good so we decided to go for it; here is our opinion.
Safety. This was never an issue. Day or night, we never felt threatened or ill at ease. The casino has guards posted outside the casino and the suites at all times. The short walk to Fremont St. Experience is a short two blocks and although there are plenty of sad, dirty, down and out of it homeless types to be seen, few if any ever approached us or ever spoke to us. They seemed content to gather in very small groups and drink and chat among themselves by Fremont St., never by the Cabana Suites.
The rooms. Most of the comments i read here proved to be true. We had the large room, what they called a "super suite". This consisted of a queen sized bed, soft, where i prefer the very firm type, but that is a matter of taste, a setee, one large chair, asmall fridge housed in what i would call a large low cabinet that had two shelves in it to be use in place of a dresser for clothing storage as there was no dresser at all. There was a glass and black wood table with mirrors that held the coffee maker and snacks and the intamacy kit. That one amused me. First time i ever saw THAT in a room. Condoms and such.
There is a small closet with an iron and an in-room safe in it and a limited number of hangers. If you are staying for any period of time at all, bring your own hangers!
The bathroom are large and indeed do have a large shower. The towels however are old and very rough. Nice if you are looking for a defoliation with every shower. They are very small also.
Overall opinion. The room service is good, but not real good. I tip $5 per day and left a not with a couple simple requests the first morning ( extra paper cups in wrappers, blanket at foot of bed, not in between sheets on bed ) and neither was met. Perhaps she didn't speak english. The two air conditioners kept the room plenty cool but one of them is directly next to the bed and that is very bad. It blows right on you at night and the only thing you can due about it is turn it off. Its also noisy. Use only the one at night. The toilet paper is cheap and rough. Ditto the kleenex. The sinks, while fancy and modern, sit two far back and make for difficult shaving and sloppy use. There are two of them however. All of this is wrapped up in lime green walls which i found quite pleasing.
Taking all this into consideration at a price of $80 a night for a downtown room i would not recommend this as place to stay without a comp. The coupon from LVA does not work with this suite.
