Hotels Downtown

Anyone out there could give me advice on what hotel to stay in downtown and why you would stay there. We usually stay at a 3 star hotel even on the strip. Not fussy but clean and need 2 queen beds. We would like to stay at 2 different hotels downtown for our 10 day stay. Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Based on your usually staying at 3 star hotels, the only suggestion would be the Golden Nugget. Other hotels will do the job, but if you're looking for the class of downtown, GN is the place. I stay there, I like it, but I have also stayed at the Golden Gate and the Plaza (way back when.) The other two, as I have said, will do the job. Others, I am sure will weigh in, and I suspect will confirm my thoughts.
I believe that the Golden Nugget is 4 star. Great hotel and pool.
If pool isn't important try Main Street Station.
Plaza will also work.
Four Queens is great location and comfortable rooms but fairly basic and no armchairs in rooms.

since you are looking for two hotels, one should be either main street station or california. both are the second nicest downtown (in my opinion), behind the obvious first pick of the golden nugget. they are also good for easy future comps. between the two, there are plenty of really good food choices. california has a 24-hour coffee shop, something which seems to be dying downtown.

the second hotel - golden nugget is (again) obviously the best hotel downtown. but if you arent looking for something that fancy, my next choice would be the el cortez - your choice of tower or cabana suites. i prefer the tower, but the cabana suites (which arent even real suites) are the supposed nicer rooms. i hated my cabana room. why the el cortez? the rooms are nice, despite people who have never stayed there declaring the opposite. you really get a lot of mileage with your MRB there. i believe theres a room rate coupon in there, free slot play and a coupon for the flame, which makes dining there a steal. the coffee shop is also good and cheap. comps are easy here too. as an added bonus, if you are staying there on your last night, you can also get a free shuttle to the airport the next day.

the plaza has hit or miss reviews, i dont want to suggest it as i have not stayed there post-renovation and i dont like to give my opinion on anything i have not experienced myself. for the same reason, i am not recomending the new rooms at the d, although they do look fantastic in pictures.

Golden Nugget for sure. I rivals 90% of the Strip hotels the rooms are large and the pool is good. Now that its been remodeled I am curious as to what the Plaza is like.

Agreed on the Nugget.
However, you may want to look into the new suites at the Golden Gate. They are not huge, but they are nice, clean and new. Also, Ill give another vote for a suite at the Plaza.

(and no matter how cheap you can get a room, stay away from Vegas Club, I think its a 1/3 star, at best)

marko..
1,) Golden Nugget--nice rooms, fancy food choices but stay away from the buffet, poor video poker

2) Main Street/California--nice rooms, solid food choices/nothing fancy, easy comps, great beer, friendly staff

3) El Cortez--tower rooms very roomy but nothing fancy but clean, alot of bang for your buck on the casino floor and restaurants. True old Vegas icon.

As for the Plaza, I think that the rooms have been nicely renovated and Las Vegas Club has been working on renovating their rooms as well (I haven't seen what they've done with them yet).

Try the D - formely Fitgerads. Most rooms will be remodeled
We recently stayed in one of the El Cortez cabana suites and I was very happy with it. It was pretty small, so we will try the junior suites next time. What I liked about it, was that it was decorated beautifully, very clean, and it is the only place I have stayed down town so far that was quiet at midnight.
