Is Golden Gate doable on a Saturday and Sunday night with the wife?

I am a bit spoiled. The folks at The Aztec once tried to rent me a room without a door...and with a dude sprawled out where the door should have been. I said,"I don't require much, but I really do need a door." Call me spoiled.

So my point is that trying to make things tolerable for a traveling companion isn't so much being spoiled as doing a little micro-planning that's part of the fun of the trip itself.

Me? I got in late a couple of years ago -- post midnight -- and rather than pay for a room, I decided to sleep in the rental car in the parking lot of The Orleans. Two issues. First, it was during the grasshopper invasion. Second, it was July and a hundred degrees at night. So I had the option of cracking the windows and being inundated with grasshoppers or lying down in a stifling car. As I said, call me spoiled.

Wow your Aztec story is amazing.

Furst time poster here.  I'd highly recommend when checking in ask if you can pay for an upgrade to a deluxe or suite room.  I don't think you can reserve deluxe room but it's slightly larger than a standard room, has a nicer updated bathroom and newer furnishings.  Most importantly as with the suites I believe they're all south facing and don't have any noise.  The rooms facing Main Street or Fremont are unbearable to sleep in. If you put in $10K+ of VP over your two day stay a host if asked will likely remove the upgrade charge for one night on a suite and possibly both nights of a deluxe.

And don't forget to turn in the LVA coupon for the $100 FSP if you run the 10k.

Excellent point.  I try to do this at both the D and GG over a 3 day stay.  It tough though on quarter play.  By the end I'm so sick of VP and that damn music.

Well, at least they had the common sense to have a person escort me to the room to see if I wanted it. It was daylight -- would have been even better had it been night. The door was sitting off its hinges next to the doorway outside.

I wonder if they were test-marketing a precursor to resort fees--a "door charge." You'd pay $20 per night with a $50 optional door charge, and if you declined, you'd discover what that meant.

I think they tried a "flush meter" on the toilets ($5 per), but the guests were happy to just poop out the window.

I can't believe they closed the Aztec Inn hotel/motel.

The "casino" however is still open.  I read an article in Vice in where a guy searches for the biggest dive bar in Vegas and finds it at the Aztec.  I'm definitely checking it out on my trip in a few weeks.

Fascinating read.

I have to say, got pretty lucky with the GG room.  We couldn't check in until 6pm but we got an upgraded room without even asking.  Think they felt bad about the late check in.  It was not loud at all but you've all pointed out those rooms were away from FSE.  We were happy to leave downtown really after 1/2 a day there. (10am Sun)  It is madhouse of freaks, loud music and pot smell.  Just not my cup of tea.  I did the LVA coupon run and did pretty well with the match plays especially.  That was Sat afternoon.  I tried to go play poker at Nugget Saturday night.....haha......like that stood a chance.  At least 40 people on each list for each game.  Downtown really needs another poker room.

My wife was great about it though.  Went to bed early on Sat and we enjoyed the rest of the trip mainly at Southpoint, hiking, pool, etc.  I played maybe 2-3 hours of VP at the D then instead Sat night.

I would play the D and GG coupons getting $100 in free play.  I believe it only takes 5K through the machines.  Still, 5 hours but I don't mind the D vue bar if not too many smokers around.  I did hit a progressive at the D on the straight flush which paid like $130 for quarter so double its usual value.  The other time I was downtown I saw that SF get as high as $300.

I like Four Queens and their VP inventory but have they ever considered air conditioning in that place or is it just because everything is so packed together?

Oh, it's air conditioned. It's just that the air curtain thingies at the entrances don't do a great job of keeping the cool air in and the hot air out, with all the foot traffic.

I just can't get too excited about downtown. Too loud, too frenetic, and too crowded. Not a fun place to be, during the pizza oven months especially.

I was downtown tonight for dinner. The 4 Queens and Binion's both hot.

Maybe A/C broke.

Been this way for years at both properties to be around 80 degrees when it's 105-110 outside.  It's always the worst right around sundown after a sweltering day.  Morning is a bit more tolerable.
