Plaza - high and low lights

We were at the Plaza mid May

Check in confused us with another person of the same name! When we got to the room...surprise! Someone was in there! Sorry, not sharing. The bellman went down to the front desk and straightened us out and came back and got us into an unoccupied room and did the leg work with the paperwork. That was appreciated. Glad we had our beverages with us while we waited.

The slot desk was probably the most helpful. They let us convert our points from the last couple of times into cash. No one prior had ever seemed to be able to tell us what the points meant! Also offered us breakfast anywhere we wanted on the property. We passed since we were heading out to Red Rock and then moving to the Paris.

We were booked at the Plaza on a two night stay comped with $100 in free play. The mini suite room was nice, but it was a smoking room and reeked because of the air conditioning unit just recirculating around the same stale air. The bathrooms are tiny (shower drained well, but did not heat up very quick) but the safe worked, the hair dryer was in the room and everything else worked.

Gambling was okay, a couple decent hits. Four aces on DDBL VP and a hot rolls slot machine that I got 28 free hot rolls bonus on set the loses to even. Why couldn't I have 28 rolls on real Craps table? Still the bonus was lots of fun for $500. Cashed and ran! Drink service was excellent. We had dinner at Simpatico. Dinner was very good, loved the chopped salad and the lasagna was excellent. For the two of us dinner was $60. One of the hostesses came in and gave us $10 match play coupons to use. Unfortunately she dated one incorrectly, or so the pit boss said and wouldn't let us use one. Not worth arguing about.

Used the pool the one day. They put in some 'daybeds' that during the week it was first come first served, but opted for just chairs. Weekends you had to pay. It was windy and 100 degrees so we didn't spend too much time there Plus the bar at the pool was getting a new hot water heater so it was closed that day. If it was open, we may have stayed a little longer. However there was a server from the casino coming to the pool area to take drink orders but waiting just didn't seem like an option that we wanted.

Checked out with a host and she was confused about our room. Then realized who we were and what offer and said we were good to go. A $56 charge showed up on my credit card that I had to call about to get removed, which finally it was. Just a tad annoying.

This is our third stay at the new Plaza but they still have some work to do. Not ready to stay again just yet. We love the downtown experience and have been splitting trips between downtown and the strip but our next stay downtown will be at the Golden Nugget. Booked online with their website for two night in one of their newer rooms that 'looked' good on the website so we'll see. We haven't played at the Nugget in years but we'll see what happens. If we don't like the gambling there, many more options are right out the back door.

On a side note, we had a really good time at the Golden Gate. The remodeling looks good. We were told the rooms were getting ready to open soon. No specifics as to when. Visited in the early morning and everyone was super friendly and won a few bucks on blackjack.
Has anyone stayed in the suites? Before the big shake-up we used to stay at the Plaza all the time. They used to give us the penthouse suites which are located on the top floor of the south tower. The rooms were huge and the bathrooms were bigger. Some of the bathrooms were three rooms.

#4 The room has a nice digital safe just outside the bathroom.
#5 The room had a nice 32" flat screen tv, with the most channels I have ever seen in a casino (dish network). Oddly I did not see a menu for any porn or hotel eminities as you normally see in a casino hotel room (I did not search for either mind you)
#6 Years ago, the Plaza had a small laundry area which comes in handy for longer stays. We were told they no longer had one and we had to go to Sahara Blvd to find one clean enough to do our's in.
#7 The pool area was open and clean. They tried to hide some of the roof vents by the pool by boxing them in and painting them brown. Every time I looked out my window onto the pool area there were 30 to 40 people enjoying themselves (all 6 days were 88 to 92 degrees-not a cloud in the sky!)
#9 The work out area had tread mills,eliptical machines, a universal weight machine, a small amount of free weights, some other various weight equipment in a 20 x 30 ft room
#13 There are two internet / printing machines just outside the hotel check in area to print airline boarding passes. $5 minimum
#14 There was no 13th floor at the Plaza as expected but there was no 2nd floor either!

I'm now back from another visit to Plaza and now I can comment more about these things:

#4 -- Yes, a safe was there and I made some use of it! Also there was a Hair Dryer as well as an Iron and Ironing Board there (which I didn't make use of);

#5 -- Yes, I liked the station line-up. There were no movie channels at all to choose from (unless I missed that). Maybe that's a ploy to get people to get back to the casino instead of having something long to watch to keep them out of the casino;

#6 -- I did see that they did offer Dry Cleaning service;

#7 -- I thought that the Pool area looked fine -- at least it did from my room (I never did make it out there);

#9 -- Unfortunately I did not make it out there (to the Gym) either -- but nonetheless I did get some good walking in walking between the casinos -- especially from Plaza to El Cortez -- about a 15 Minute walk each way including standing at Signals;

#13 -- As for the Internet Kiosks, you missed another two that are by the tables in the Food Court which is $1 Minimum, 25 Cents Per Minute and 50 Cents per Printed Page. Las Vegas Club has the same $1 Minimum but charges 20 Cents Per Minute instead of 25 Cents Per Minute;

and #14 -- Besides there not being a 2nd and 13th Floor, there is also no 4th Floor (at least in the South Tower).

Stayed one night for $49 just to check out the new rooms; this was on April 2 this year. We stayed on the strip (Flamingo) but as always, we get a comped room at the 4 queens, and decided to stay an extra night downtown (American Country Music awards weekend, which made for an interesting crowd!).

Remodeled room faced Fremont street, very good view. Had one of the best Martinis I've ever had at the Oscar's bar. The only part I found annoying was playing video poker at the only bar that was open late at night; I think its called the Omaha bar: I sat down at an open seat to play VP, and 10 minutes later some old guy walks up and says: "I guess you can just sit down and play at my machine, huh..." I'm thinking, REALLY? There was NO marker or any indication that the machine was being saved, so that was a damper on my experience. Then, a drunk gal walks up and accuses the staff of throwing her cigarette away, and wants to have the manager buy her another pack of smokes. She sits there for the next 45 minutes bitching about this, and had there been another bar open, I would have moved. Also have to say the bar, although very nicely remodeled, was staffed by the same folks at the old bar (read: really slow service).

Nevertheless, I found the room really nice (except for the super-tiny soap.. really, it's about the size of a quarter!). Kudos to the effort to spruce up the place, and I would recommend a stay there to anyone. Our king bed was VERY comfortable!

Well it's good to hear that the Plaza's clientele hasn't changed.
I stayed at the Plaza a few weeks ago and wanted to report.

The Good:
Employees were friendly and accommodating.They were responsive to the little problems I had with the room. (See below)
There is a nice variety of dining choices for all budgets ranging from McDonald's to the steak house.
People seemed to be enjoying the pool area.
The room was attractively furnished, and had a nice sized safe as well as an ironing board, iron and hair dryer.

The Bad:
The toilet paper in the rooms is really cheap, and I'm not that picky.
No shower caps, so bring your own. I asked a maid, and they don't have them.
My towel rack fell off the counter it was attached to the first time I grabbed a towel.
(They did send someone to fix it promptly.)
While unpacking and hanging my clothes,a plastic holder holding the wood hanger broke. (They did send someone to fix it promptly.)
The iron was broken when I tried to use it. (They did send someone with a new iron.)
There was no luggage rack in the room, and I just didn't feel like asking for one after the little annoyances mentioned above. (I know, get a real problem!)
The modern, square, above counter sink made it difficult to put make-up on. (I know, get a real problem!)

Anyway, I was comped two nights, and paid $30.00 for the third night, so I really can't complain.There were no major issues, just a lot of little things. I would stay there again if comped, but not sure I would pay to stay. I am on the fence.

Well that's it.
P.S. There was a homeless person sleeping at a machine at 8:00 one morning. This didn't bother me. But just wanted to mention it in case some people would be bothered by that.

I hate them, too. Does anyone actually think this is an improvement from the way it's been done for the past, I dunno, 200 years?

And I thought I was the only un-hip person on the boards. I'm un-frou-frou, un-chi-chi, and un just about everything trendy known to man...
