Recvpplayer,
I stayed in the south tower both before and after the renovations. The dimensions of the rooms did not change, but the décor and cleanliness were certainly upgraded. Great value for $29. I did not pay a resort fee when I stayed there or I would have stayed at the Golden Nugget for $39. I also got a refrigerator just by asking! They originally wanted $20 a night for one but they gave in quickly (I didn't even start to whine!)
The north Tower "sometimes" has train noise, but I have never heard any.
Ensure you add the $10 resort fee to the equation when you are trying to figure out if you are getting a good value for your buck.
Do not pay for a view down Fremont street until we figure out how much of the view will be gone after they build the permanent end to the zip line. (under construction now). I payed for the view once and MIGHT have actually looked down Fremont street from the room twice? Its a decent view, I wouldn't pay for it again.
I played very little in the Plaza while I stayed there, maybe $100 a day (craps) and have received NO offers since.
FYI, the sports book area is open and very clean and modern.
FYI, I think the second week in September is the traditional "bike week" in Las Vegas. I saw a few good sights last year during that week.....bikers are an interesting group during bike weeks!
enjoy weggie
