Rio Suites

My 29 year old boy is making his first trip to Vegas.  I would have recommended differently, but I'm interested if any of you folks have been to this place lately.  I've read that it's nothing like it used to be, maybe 20+ years ago.  It was cheap.......Spirit non-stop flights arriving 10pm on a Monday (January 9), and departing 6 am on Saturday for $550 out the door including both hotel and air.  I'll wil also post this question elsewhere on LV Advisor.

Give me your thoughts, please.

Much of the casino is closed, stay away from Penn & Teller, rooms are worn out

Does anyone know which rooms are less worn out?

Since it is his first Vegas trip, he'll love it, since nothing fancy to compare it with.  The Rio has reportedly deteriorated, which is really sad, but It used to be wonderful, all rooms large enough to be called "suites" which they aren't really, unless he gets an actual suite, which maybe he doesn't need anyway if traveling alone.  Five nights and air for $500 is a deal, and non-stop is icing on the cake.  Not sure why Tom said "stay away from Penn & Teller", but if son hasn't seen them before he should enjoy the show.  Just don't have luxury expectations and plan for a lot of looking around.

Candy

Candy - don't know when you saw them last, but the show isn't what it used to be.  I saw them 20 years ago when I was in town for work & the show was terrific.

Wife really wanted to see it & we went.  Show now consists of Penn talking about himself more than half the time.  Less than 10 tricks, we both dozed off & at 1 time we heard someone snoring.  At this point they are mailing it in

Look at the Vegas.com reviews, the bad reviews say the same thing, to much talking, only a couple of dull tricks & a lot of sleeping.

Thanks, Tom.  Didn't know about that.  Too bad.  At least 20 years, probably more, since we saw them.

Sounds like they should have, as my uncle advised my sister and I, "Leave 'em while yer lookin' good."  Too late, I guess.

Stay there but head to Gold Coast and Palms to gamble.  If car, go to Orleans for a little poker.

Here is a short recent review that sums the current state of the RIO up nicely.

I would consider the Horseshoe (Bally's).  Close to the same price that week.  The Rio is isolated from the Strip,  A long walk to and from the strip.  If he has a car then the Rio would be OK.  The rooms are larger than most hotels.  The casino does not have a lot going on now.  Most of the resturants are closed.  The ones open close early.
