Switching to Golden Nugget over The D

We have always stayed at The D, back to when it was Fitzgeralds.  The last couple years, we have been awarded awful rooms that are loud (even when we request quiet side) and, while I know there is no guarantee on room type, I have a special note in my file that I need to be adjoined with my elderly father, or at a minimum next door/across hall.  We always get the same snarky response that there's no guarantee and there's nothing available.  AND, I typically call the day before and remind them that I need to be near my father (he's 84).  This last time, it was a mess and we decided it is time to move on from our favorite downtown hotel/casino.  We both have free rooms at Golden Nugget.  I know nothing about the hotel, but understand it is an upgrade from The D.  My question is what tower should i request when quiet is the most important, and adjoining rooms is a major plus.  Also, keeping in mind that a long walk to the casino is not the greatest, but it is doable if the preceding requests are accommodated.  Thank you in advance!!!

If you're on the side of Fremont that contains the D, the GN, Circa, etc., then you want your room to be facing south (towards the Strip). You also, if you can swing it, want whatever they call the "south tower." The no-sleep rooms face onto the FSE AND are in the closer (north) tower.

But as you noted, the real issue is whether they'll honor your request--and there's no guarantee that they will, even if you make sure to bug them ahead of time. The only real defense is to get there as early in the day as possible.

The GN is a minor qualitative improvement over the D, room-wise, but not significantly so IMHO. One factor you mentioned that may influence your decision is that the rooms at the GN are farther from the casino floor, restaurants, etc. than the D's rooms are.

This "we can't guarantee room type" nonsense is just another crock of shit that they feed you. If you reserve a room and put down a deposit, why on earth can't they reserve that specific room for you?

I too have a major issue with noise at the D, as you say, even in the supposedly "quiet" rooms.

The Golden Nugget is much quieter that the D, generally, and that goes for any room.   The most quiet rooms are the Strip side of the Rush tower.  There is one exception.   On nights that the Downtown Events Center (check the schedule) has a concert (many of them are many bands or DJ's and run till 2 or 3am), these rooms can be very noisey too.   Note that they might view both of these as preferences as "upgrades" and will want to charge a fee for.   At check in, you might be able to get these without a fee, but I would say only a 1/3 chance of that, at best.

The Carson tower is the "worst" of the 3 main towers, but I would say the rooms in that tower are better than most at the D.   It is also quieter, than any room in the D.  It is a MUCH longer walk from that tower to the casino.

The Gold Tower is the closest to the casino.   One side faces the FSE, and so is noiser than the other.

There is also a Spa Tower, but it is mostly suites.

I was in a friend's Carson Tower rooom three years ago, and there was a concert happening at Downtown Las Vegas Event Center.  It sits about 200 yards from this tower, and the base was literally moving the curtains, and you could feel the room vibrate.  You can check the schedule, and it seems to me that they don't do daily shows.  This tower should be quiet if no show is going on at this event center.

I've stayed in the Rush Tower a few times and those are gorgeous, spacious rooms.    That Tower is not  right on Fremont St but you can still hear the noise.   Thats true of any room in the GN I think.    Obviously the ones overlooking it directly have more noise.    GN is pretty good about sending mail offers too.  My last stay was 2019 and they still send me stuff every month.

El COrtez, Main St Station and California are really the only hotels downtown I would say are truly quiet.

I have beat this subject to the ground but there's a new twist with a Plaza offer. What's most important to me is clean and QUIET room. Given those facts, do I go with The D, Plaza or Golden  Nugget. I love gambling at Plaza, I love the proximity to casino and adore the 2nd floor bar at The D and I'm new to Golden Nugget (have never stayed there but earned comp offers after playing there in February). I do like the GN pool but not so much the gambling and its soooo crowded. Too cut up in that casino and I can't find my people. But maybe would get used to it. Given those facts, sell me on your choice...thx!

With the Plaza, you introduce a new factor for noise.   The Plaza was formerly called the Union Plaza, because it was also a train station, meaning railroad tracks run within feet of the building.   Now, only freight trains run on these tracks, but they run throughout the day and night, blowing their train whistles, and with the hundred car loads rumbling away as they travel by.   I'm sure you will hear from the "it's not a problem there for me" crowd, but it is an issue for some.

If you want the 100% sure quiet room downtown, it's Circa, in the Eastern side, away from the pool.   I've stayed there several times, and it was completely quiet.  No trains, and no music from FSE or shows/concerts.

I stay at the Plaza every trip and have for years. I ask for the North tower (closest to the front desk) facing the mountains.  I am noise sensitive too and truly the occasional train passing by doesn't bother me at all.  I like that the air conditioning unit stays on constantly and provides white noise to sleep to.  I detest units that turn on and off all the time. Ask for the newly renovated LUXE rooms they are very comfortable.
