Visiting Las Vegas

Hi All -

Visitng LV after a many year hiatus.  Staying downtown at the Nugget in August.  Besides the Mob Museum, what are some of the more recent "Must Sees" for my visit?

Have a great day!

John

I would say you should book a tour of the Neon Museum since it is close to downtown.

And also their Brilliant show in the evening.  It is short but very enjoyable.

Bring lots and lots of money (everything will be insanely expensive) and some SPF 1,000,000 sunblock (Vegas in August: GAAAH!). There aren't many "must sees" downtown, and of course, what you might want to visit depends on your transportation options. Riding the bus will be untenable in the heat. If you have a car, you have more possibilities, of course.

I didn't like the Mob Museum, because I generally don't like the glamorization of what is basically just an organization of violent criminal thugs. The one museum I found interesting was the Atomic Musuem, possibly because I grew up during the Cold War.

I know it wil be hot but if you get out early taking a stroll to view all the murals in downtown is a fun free activity.  At the Mob Museum, which is actually "The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement" they also have a speakeasy, the Underground, which has some cool displays dealing with that aspect of history and great craft cocktails.   Pool at GN is great and of course always checking out the latest casino which is Circa downtown...first new one in many many years.

Enjoy the airconditioning in the casinos.

If you have time visit Area 15; it's unreal!!

Take a tour of Hoover Dam.  If you have time, take the tour that is combined with a float trip down Black Canyon.  (Guided motorized raft...you do get your feet wet.)  The combo tour ends up in the afternoon.  Transportation there and back to your hotel.

Second the Hoover Dam tour, though not the river trip...I wouldn't want to be out there in the middle of the afternoon in August. At the bottom of Black Canyon, it can be 5-10 degrees hotter than up at the dam visitor center. As in, 5 to 10 degrees hotter than a 115-degree day.

Kevin has a point, but it isn't like walking the Strip in the middle of the day.  We did the river trip in the middle of a summer, can't recall which year, what the temp was, but the water was pretty cold and you get misted lightly, enough to stay cool.  You pull over and have a boxed lunch (they provide) sitting ashore.  I think it was pleasant enough.  However, do bring/apply sunscreen.  The trip ends downstream where busses are waiting to take you to your hotel.

But, sure enough if the prospect of the heat is daunting, the Dam tour itself is fascinating, moreso than you would imagine.

And just think, in a few years, we'll be able to take the "historical relic" dam tour, where we can see the now-silent massive turbines that produced electricity "when there used to be water in the lake."

Those who choose to shuffle off this mortal coil by leaping off the face of the dam will now have a choice, as there will be a several-hundred-foot drop on both sides.

Interesting article about the dam dog.
