I read an article from a Vegas historian recently that he thinks Vegas is in some serious trouble. The explosion in the number of new casinos as gambling is legalized in more and more states (Maryland and Pennsylvania have almost destroyed Atlantic City) means fewer people need to travel long distances to places like Vegas to gamble.
So how do the casinos respond? By increasing the table minimums, decreasing slot payouts, reducing room offers, and offering almost nothing in the way of comps. They've added great restaurants and some cool shows, but now seem to be catering to the "Jersey Shore" d-bag crowd who just want to get drunk, go to clubs, scream "Vegas, baby!" and get into fights, particularly the guys who couldn't pick up a girl at the previously mentioned clubs. Granted, this is primarily on the Strip, but when/if people start getting wise to what a ripoff it is for gamblers, they'll stop coming altogether.
I still go at least twice a year (love staying there in summer for the pools, and then in December for football weekends), but I know several people who quit going because they can just drive a couple of hours to a local place.
I sound like a curmudgeon, but in all honestly, it's still our favorite vacation spot.
