another Biloxi trip

Just got back from another quick trip to Biloxi, a three-night Beau Rivage air package out of St. Pete/Clearwater. Our friends, Glen and Jennifer came this time; we were originally all wait-listed, but got in about two weeks ago. Lots of fun, and as always, we mostly played elsewhere. We all had a few good hits, I wound up down about $150 and Linda (wife) was down about $60.

SUNDAY
Easy charter flight out of St. Pete/Clearwater, about an hour late because of some storms in Mississippi (which never affected us, it was cloudy while we were there, but we never got any significant rain). Seamless transfers, and we had room 9071, a Gulf view room, always nice.

There's not much to play at the Beau, we usually give them just a little play on the quarter 8/5 JoB progressives at the bar (I also did a little sniping on a few Ultimate X machines). There are two progressives, one on either side of the bar; one was $1050 and the other was $1500 (finally got hit for about $1700 Tuesday evening, not by us); as usual, the crowd wasn't favoring the $1500 side. Hell, most were slow-playing DDB or Caveman Keno for one coin, to get free drinks. We did meet one high-roller (we saw on his machine that he had about $2600 in comps), he was playing dollar ten-play short-pay DDB, said that he never uses any particular strategy because it's all luck anyway. Saw him dealt 777A3, and yup, he held the three sevens and the ace kicker. Anyway, we all played a little bit and then took a cab to IP, had a very good (but crowded) buffet, played some Illinois Deuces for a while (got a dealt WR on my last $1.25, that saved me for a while). One thing, IP used to give all Sapphire players $20 in food comps every week; we went to the players club and were told that it was only available the day after you play. So, we paid for the buffets and, after playing after dinner, found the $20 vouchers on the kiosk. Should have played a little before dinner and figured it out for ourselves.

MONDAY
We hit the Beau Rivage buffet for breakfast, had some MyVegas rewards (which are mostly useless in Vegas these days). The Beau buffet isn't what it used to be, but breakfast is probably the best bet, it was very nice. Took the Boomtown shuttle, spent most of the afternoon at Boomtown, had a good time there. They have some good VP for dollars on the second floor, I threw $100 into a 9/6 Bonus Deluxe machine, got beaten up, then threw in another hundred, did better, then hit quad 8s for $400.

Would have stayed ahead, if it weren't for a nightmare blackjack session, quickest $100 I ever lost ($10 DD table), in spite of some nice decks. Played around some more, enjoyed our Senior Day FP, then went back over to the IP, played some more Illinois Deuces, also some 9/6 JoB (they have a few 25-50-$1 machines upstairs, but they don't give a lot of points). Decided to take the Casino Hopper back to the Beau, but one of the buses was out of service and there were NO taxis at the IP, so we waited about an hour. Finally got back, Linda stayed at the Beau to watch a hockey game, and Glen, Jennifer and I went to Mary Mahoney's for dinner. Really a great dinner, I love this place, it's a little pricey but classic Gulf Coast seafood, done really well. Great waitress, Miranda, says that she's been there for 13 years (looks to be about 20, though, but I'm old and it's hard to tell). Had some good gumbo, really memorable flounder imperial, stuffed snapper, bread pudding.

TUESDAY
Treasure Bay Day. We went out there (easy trip on the Beach Comber bus) for the first time last trip, really liked it, and have been getting lots of mailers from just a little bit of play. I'm starting to like Treasure Bay Day like I like El Cortez Day in Vegas. Anyway, we played a little bit at the bar at the Beau (progressive was up to $1660), failed to hit the progressive. Glen and Jen had chicken and waffles at the coffee shop and raved about it; Linda and I split a surprisingly adequate muffaletta at the snack bar.

Took the Beach Comber to Treasure Bay and we all had a great time. I did fairly well on the 50 cent BP machines, got one premium quad.

Also found a bank of quarter 8/5 JoB machines with a $2400 progressive, held my own but obviously didn't hit that progressive, either, or it would have been obvious by now.

Had to guess at a lot of the strategy; I have a strategy for a $1500 RF, but who the hell has a $2400 strategy. We all got lots of FP, some from mailers, some from Senior Day, some completely unexpected. I'm not complaining. They also have a promo, if you refer a new players club sign-up, you get that person's points as well for the first day; thanks, Glen and Jen! Anyway, we hit the buffet for dinner, it's not a great looking room (looks a little like a lunch room in an East German factory), but they have good, solid local food, also Dungeness crab legs.

After dinner, we planned to catch the Beach Comber back, but it never came; I called the CTA office, they said that one of the buses was, again, out of service. We called a cab and got back to the Beau. It's a shame, the local buses have always run like clockwork, and now we had two no-shows in two days. Anyway, a little more play (progressive was $1006; sigh...) and bedtime

WEDNESDAY
Early departure for the airport, 7am. I had one last session over a cup of coffee, cashed out even, and it was an easy trip home.

All in all, a quick and fun trip. I wish we weren't stuck with the Beau air packages, there used to be other options (the old Gulfport Grand; the IP; I think Isle of Capri), and air from the Tampa Bay area costs about as much as the entire package (not to mention transfers from an airport about 15 miles away). Still, this is an easy trip compared to Vegas and there's still more than enough to play. Thanks for reading!

Thanks Jon for this report as well as for the nice photos and good going on the hits, taking advantage of promotions and coming home with a relatively minor loss.

Sorry to read that the Blackjack loss was so blisteringly fast!

As for 8/5 Bonus Progressive Poker, maybe you should get a chart together for when it's at 100% (which it is at [if I'm remembering correctly] $2,166.50 -- so you could set it for 8,666 Credits).
Thanks, Rec. Actually, the big progressive (and the progressives at the Beau) were on 8/5 JoB, so still not positive at that level. Not as many opportunities in Biloxi as in Vegas, but an easy, fun trip. Thanks for your comments!

You're very welcome! Sorry for accidentally previously saying 8/5 Bonus Progressive, but I actually did mean just 8/5 Jacks Or Better. I did double check this by going to the Wizard Of Odds' Video Poker Calculator and punching all of what you showed in for 8/5 Jacks Or Better (from what I previously learned) and I then input both 8,666 coins (that's $2,166.50) for the Royal Flush on 8/5 Jacks Or Better and got a return of 1.000002% with a Variance of 95.543794 and when I input 9,580 Credits for an exactly $2,395 Royal Flush Jackpot, I got a return of 1.005628 with a Variance of 116.849544.

And so plain old 8/5 Jacks Or Better is actually positive beginning at $2,166.50. I'm happy that this trip worked out and you had all of that nice play at a relatively low cost!

You probably passed by us. Little Rock to Beau via Sun Country charter.

Our friend Connie and I haunted the Dragons Rising machines at Beau. Mine did better than hers, so she was all over the place, while my husband was the go-fer guy. I played a little dollar VP to try for the progressive RF which is only on JOB on those machines. No luck there.

The Beau had the scratch-off promotion for all month of May from which we got a lot of Free Play, tee shirts, a baseball cap, retail spending and food/beverage, which I used for the dee-licious blueberry lemon drop martinis in the 875 Bar. We still had enough in F&B scratchers to cover three lunches in the Terrace Café. We go back on the charter on May 31st, and I still have $65 in Free Play, $30 in retail and $15 in food/beverage to use by June 1st, and Connie has a lot also. On the 29th they draw for a Jaguar from everyone's entries, but we won't be there that day.

Our Host also got us in a jewelry promotion, kind of a trunk show type thing. I had $250 on my offer, Connie had $300. In Vegas they would consider this double promotion dipping and disallow us, but things are more relaxed in Biloxi. Like Jean Scott says, it never hurts to ask, and we did, no problem. I didn't figure I'd get much for $250, but I got two necklaces and 2 pair of earrings for my $250 (plus tax but still a good deal). Not fine jewelry of course, but good quality.

We spent some time at Hard Rock next door (also on Dragons Rising machines) with Free Play on Monday and on Wednesday. Found out we both have a lot of comps there, and we ate Monday night at Ruth's Chris steak house. Husband's rib eye was delicious. I had two sides, a small lobster tail and crab cake with asparagus and the lemon sauce, all excellent and enough for me. Great service.

Wednesday we went to Harrah's just planning to stay long enough to use some Free Play. It is a small casino, haven't been impressed on previous trips, but they've just installed some volcano type machines (loud!) and another kind (big gold nuggets and wolf howling combo get some bonus rounds, forget what it is called) which kept us busy for hours. In Harrah's if you want a "double" anything to drink you have to be Diamond or 7 Stars. Connie and I are Diamond, but husband gambles almost none so he is "tin" or Gold. But this really cool cocktail server guy figured out that husband could order my Mimosas and I would order his double jack and cokes (Connie had White Russians with double kahluah. We tipped the guy well and he kept the drinks coming. I'm not sure I'll make Diamond this year, but I made some headway on it this trip and we had a good time in there.

Didn't mean to turn this into our trip report, but you inspired me. Glad you had a good time. We intend some day to make it to Mary Mahoney's and also to Treasure Bay. Seems like there is never enough time to do everything. Our flight left early this morning and I'm still recovering from those martinis!
Thanks for the info, Rec. Yeah, positive plays on 8/5 JoB prog are rare. Look at that variance, it's like a slot machine!

Candy, really sorry we missed you, and thanks for the trip report!!! Sounds like you guys had a great time. We play less at the Beau, we're mostly VP players and don't mind slumming (that's what we do in Vegas as well). I hope you do make it to Treasure Bay some day, it's a lot of fun, kind of a lowbrow place but very generous with comps. And Mary Mahoney's is pricey, but really a wonderful experience, one of those places that hasn't changed in 60 years, and pure Gulf Coast.

You ever been to Mignon's, at the Palace? I hear it's one of the best steakhouses in town.

Thanks again, Candy, hope our paths cross in Biloxi someday!
Thanks, Jon. Normally I'm a VP player too, but got hooked on the penny quick hit machines lately, one of which is Dragon Rising. I saw some $10 BJ tables at the Beau and intended to play some, but again, time gets away.

One piece of trivia from playing the Dragon Rising machine: The background music during the bonus round is "Dragon Attack" by Queen. Brian May is credited as the writer, and the song is on one or more of their albums. I saw this when the machine next to mine malfunctioned. When the tech finished fixing it, the screen went through several 'pages' during the upload, and the attribution to Brian May and Queen was on one of the pages. There were also about six signatures but I couldn't make out Brian's or Freddy's or any of them...all kind of scrawled. You also can find that 'page' if you scroll through the pay table pages.

I looked it up when I got home. One story is that Dragon Attack was initiated during one of their studio sessions, just sort of messing around. It is hard to hear it well in the casino. Two or three lines of the lyrics, which are sung fast and loud, come at the end of the bonus round as the Asian-looking 'doors' are closing. I could finally make out "I've got a dragon on my back. Its a dragon attack." So far I haven't found anything about how this came to be licensed to a slot machine! The lyrics of the whole song make little sense, and various interpretations abound, including the "Dragon Attack" referring to the stress of writing a songs/albums, of touring, etc; also of course, as a reference to drugs.

You're very welcome! It's definitely something that the machine had gone positive but yes, that Variance is quite high! If I'm remembering correctly, I think that 8/5 Bonus Poker goes positive at about $1,397.

Thanks, Rec!

Linda, Glen and Jen play a lot of Quick Hit machines; Glen hit one for $1300 in Vegas last time, saved his trip (now he has a W-2G to deal with, though). I usually play very little slots, sometimes I'll throw a $20 into a Li'l Red or Lobstermania machine just to take a break, and hopefully for the casino to identify me as a slots player for marketing offers (rarely seems to work). Interesting about "Dragon Attack," I don't think I know the song. I know that the bonus round music on Lobstermania is "Rock Lobster," by the B-52s. I guess that's a little more royalty money for the artist; I wonder how many machines have licensed music like that.
Stayed at the IP in Biloxi in Jan. Had a good time. Went to the Palace and played there a while. Seems like the Palace has two senior days but only one do you actually get a discount at the buffet? Does Southern Gaming still offer coupons?
