Howdy, JM.
The analogy of the Emperor's New Clothes compels me to defend (at least) my reaction the previous Elton John show at Caesars -- because I've never thought of myself as gullible. I suppose Dave Lachapelle's production could be interpreted as mass hypnosis, but I would call it theatrical genius. I saw the show twice and did, at one point, say that the collection of veteran musicians beneath the spectacle -- including E.J. -- were almost superfluous. And this might actually validate your point. I'm guessing The Million Dollar Piano will be less spectacle and more concert. But that's only a guess. I can't find much information on the new production.
In defense of Elton John's voice -- it has mellowed. He compensates for a limited range with calculated phrasing. He is quite adept at this -- but it fundamentally alters the delivery of many lyrics we have carried in our heads for decades. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes not.
I would certainly call Manilow is a better vocalist and a more traditional showman -- and I enjoyed his Paris show very much. Of course, I only saw him once -- unless you count the meet and greet. >insert smiley face HERE<
