Penn & Teller

I saw P&T years ago & they were great.  The wife wanted to see them on this trip. Their only good magic trick was making our money disappear.

Penn talks about half the time & they only do a few magic tricks.  Show was only 75 minutes. They are clearly mailing it in now.

Free tickets would still be a waste.

We went the next night to see a Beatles show at Southpoint which was great and only a third of the price.

Was the Beatles show the 4 impersonators?  Similar to the Bee Gee guys?  If so, those shows are amazingly good.

I first saw Penn & Teller almost 40 years ago in a 99-seat theater in Beverly Hills. I'm guessing the tickets cost about $10 each and I probably arrived 20 minutes early so I scored front-row seats. They hadn't yet appeared on TV.

In one of their first tricks, Teller very realistically appeared to stab Penn in the hand, and there was lots of "blood" and screaming until they revealed their subterfuge. But the last time I saw them, it was almost like a conventional magic show, with little of the edginess they became famous for. Maybe it's that they've grown old.

The group was Fourever Fab.  In addition to the Beatles they did a number of songs from other groups from the 60's.

That show was an hour forty.  In contrast if Penn didn't talk so much their show would have been about 45 minutes

Its just a very dated act.   There was a certain shock value to their show when it first came out.    Nowadays   nobody is scooping their jaw off the floor watching graphic displays of gore mixed with magic.

And lets be honest - thats true of most magic shows.

The abra-cadabra illusions are about as fresh as a Beach Boys concert

The show now consists of Penn talking, card tricks & the finale is Penn talking for 10 minutes & then a fire trick.  All for the low price of $70+ per person.

You park in the back of the Rio so you don't have to see how bad the Rio is now.

I have never understood the "attraction" for this show, and the fact that people actually pay for it. To each their own...
