Last week, I checked out 'The Rat Pack Is Back' at the RIO and
was quite pleased (given the limited reality these Shows have to work with...)
This is the Show that recently re located from the downtown Plaza and
has taken up residency in RIO's 'Crown Theatre'.
This showroom has seen a lot of Shows over the years...The Copacabana Dinner Show,
Danny Gans, SCINTAS, Ronn Lucus, just to name a few...it's a great room.
YES...it's newer than the older room at the Plaza...many folks liked that
room because it added to the ambience/the feel of the original Summit at
the Sands.
Let me assure you...'The Rat Pack Is Back' works great in 'Crown Theatre'.
The layout of the showroom and stage makes it easy for...'the boys' to
interact with the audience AND...come down into the audience for a more
closer, one on one interaction.
The lighting and sound are much better in 'Crown' than at the Plaza and
the LIVE mini orchestra works much better there also.
Prior to seeing the Show, I'd read mixed reports about the seating arrangements...
...this is what I experienced.
There are 3 seating sections.
1. Gold Circle tables on the floor, down front, around the stage.
2. VIP 'lounge couches' in back of the Gold Circle tables.
3. General Admission 'lounge couches' on the upper section off the floor and more
on the rear upper level above that. MAITRE'D TIPPING IS IN EFFECT.
I'd call it a medium size showroom...View and sound are real good everywhere, it just
depends on if you prefer to sit up close to the stage at a table or further back on one
of the comfy lounge couches.
(the 'illusion' works a bit better further back)
I chose a General Admission tic, tipped my usher $10. and requested a couch on the
upper/center rear level...and got it. (save for the Show's director, I was the only one sitting back there)
The 'lounge couches' are large, seating for 6, and comfy.
They have a small 'box' stool next to each couch you can move to the center and use as a table...
other than than, you hold your drinks.
The Show is new to the RIO, and was only 3/4 full and there in lays the bottom line...WILL IT STAY
AT THE RIO???
The re modeled Plaza will soon be open. Will the Show move back downtown to it's old home
where it's been all these years?
The Show will stay where it makes money so..............
As for the Show itself, it's scripted (how could it not be...) BUT...these guys have been together
for quite a while now, and they've got it down. Down to the point where they feel comfortable to
add lib, play off the audience and each other...they make it feel (almost) natural and unexpected
additions from the audience 'can' make it lots of fun.
Between the new showroom, it's lighting and sound quality...this is no economy Show.
Everything is LIVE, entertaining and well presented.
YES...there IS cocktail service inside the showroom as well as restrooms.
Is this the Rat Pack Show to see?...you'll have to decide for yourselves.
The BEST one is long gone and (probably) not many of us were fortunate enough to see it.
For a short period of time, while filming Oceans Eleven...Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and
Sammy Davis Jr. worked a room like no one before or since. That was where 'cool' started
and ended...admired by the famous and not so famous.
Today, we have their memories and OUR imaginations.
Check out a Show...THEY'RE GOOD FOR YOU!
