When VIVA ELVIS opened at Aria, I went to 2 preview
Shows and...wasn't very impressed. From the intro to
the finally, it was pretty awkward. Scenes didn't fit together
well, some were visually WOW! while others were so blazay
and seemed to have very little connection to anything ELVIS.
Well...they've certainly come a long way since those opening
preview Shows...
The pace of the Show works much better, all the sets are bright
and colorful, there's more real ELVIS sound tracks and less featured
cast singers and that makes a big difference.
The Col.Tom Parker character has a much smaller, more effective role
and the Pre-Show fun now has all the excited teenage girl fans wondering
the front sections of the showroom, yackin' it up with the audience until
the excitement of showtime reaches a head and they push past the security
guards, jump on stage, tear down the front curtain and WHAM!... you're
blasted with light, color, music, and ELVIS!
I've sat in the front section, the middle section, and this time wanted a
rear or balcony seat but they were all SOLD OUT. Mid front section was all I
could get this time...I bet it looks great from the balcony!
CIRQUE is constantly changing/improving VIVA ELVIS and this version works
real well. Scenes, periods in the Kings life, history, are much easier visualized
now and that's not always been easy when looking through the eyes of
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL.
Even the aerial-guitar scene where ELVIS and his twin brother play (his twin died
in child birth...) makes more sense now when his brother falls, leaving only ELVIS
to carry out his destiny alone.
There's a great flurry of over the top staging, light and color for it's new finally,
the LIVE band is stronger than ever, and everyone seems to just have a blast.
VIVA THE NEW IMPROVEMENTS!
I was very pleased this time...had fun and was quite entertained.
