Farmers Insurance Open The Farmers Insurance Open is held at Torrey Pines GC North and South Courses. The South Course will host the weekend play.
Tiger Woods makes his 2011 debut and while I don't think he'll win this week, it would be tough to back him in matchups where he is favored by 2-1 against Phil Mickelson or Dustin Johnson with too much uncertainty at this point in the season. I don't like the new swing moves, but his short game will always keep him competitive. Recall Tiger won the 2008 U.S Open on one leg here at Torrey and the horses for courses angle is difficult to ignore with Tiger winning here 7x in the L10 years.
Usually I'm at this event handicapping, taking notes and talking to caddies etc, but could not make it this week, however LVASports member, good friend and So Cal resident the Dude, from Dude Sports Inc is scouting the field for us this week and he reports, ....Johnny Vegas is long and straight and Mike Weir may be better than advertised. Hopefully we'll get more from the Dude on Wed as he is attending the Pro-Am as well.
I'm waiting for more matchups to appear and or better prices.
Bill Haas -140 vs Hunter Mahan.....3 Units
In what appears to be a very strong spot to bet against Mahan here, this is my biggest play of the season to date.
After playing the opening week at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, which was for 2010 winners only, no cut and a free check, plus Fed Ex Cup points, Mahan finished a very poor T25 in a field of 32. There is good reason for his lack luster performance.
Mahan was married the week after to a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. (you fill in the blanks)
Then it was off to Aspen for his honeymoon, skiing, something Mahan has never tried before, (lucky he didn't break his neck) and snowboarding.
Next week Mahan will defend his title in Phoenix at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Surely, after two weeks of R&R or R&S his game cannot be sharp and this week is a tune-up at best.
Haas almost won last week in a playoff, his game especially his short game is sharp and he is sneaky long off the tee. He has made 4 straight cuts in this event and was T11 in '08.
