Horse Question

Horse Question I had a question about horses. I know for Win wagers, the track pools together all the wagers bet on horses that did not win, takes a percentage of that amount and then pays the rest to the winners. I assume the same works for place and show wagers. Is there a bigger percentage taken out by the tracks for these place and show wagers than the percentage taken out for the win wagers? Also, is there a general percentage that is taken out of the pool? 10%, 15%. Just trying to educate myself a little on how this whole horse thing works with DiscreetCat posting here. Thanks
18% on any straight wager, 24% on any exotic wager.
18% on any straight wager, 24% on any exotic wager.
Back in the day it varied from state to state.
Fair enough. That's what it was in California in the mid-90s, anyway.

The current takeout @ Del Mar and Saratoga is as follows: Del Mar Win/Place/Show 15.43% Exotics 20.68% Saratoga Win/Place/Show 16% Exacta/Quinella/Double 18.5% All other exotics 26% There's also "breakage", which rounds down (never up) all $2 payouts to the nearest 20 cent increments (10 cent increments in New York).
