Marquez vs Diaz II (7/31) The first time around these guys put on a fantastic fight.
This is a fight between a light hitting high pressure fighter against a counter puncher.
Since the last time these two went at it, they have both lost a fight. Diaz lost to Malignaggi and Marquez lost to Mayweather.
Diaz actually fought Malignaggi twice. The first time, in his backyard, he was given a questionable decision. They fought again in Chicago and Malignaggi (who couldn't punch his way out of wet paper bag) dominated Diaz.
The first clash between Marquez and Diaz was exciting and recently I watched the match again. Before the stoppage, the boxers where on pace to break a bunch of compubox (punch tracker) records.
This should be a very entertaining fight. Diaz's high pressure, throw the kitchen sink at his opponent style can be very entertaining. This won't be a Mayweather fight of hit and don't be hit. Both of these guys will land a lot of punches. In the first fight, they where consistently landing 30 or more punch each per round. The difference in the fight is that Marquez has more skills, and hits harder. Marquez started landing the uppercut consistently in the middle rounds and KO'd Diaz in the 9th round.
When thinking about rematches, one of the first things to consider other then who won the first fight, is how do each of the fighters fight. Marquez is a counter puncher and Diaz is a pressure fighter. A common prose in boxing is "once a counter puncher cracks his opponents code the fight is over". After the second round it started becoming apparent that between Marquez and Nacho Beristain (Marquez's Hall of Fame cornerman) they had figured out the code and Marquez began cracking that code. It was still a very tight fight and I personally scored it 77-76 prior to the 9th round. (Marquez)
The card for this fight, looks fantastic. There are at least two other fights on the July 31st card that I'll probably try to get some money down on and it is a card I won't hesitate to pay for.
Oh yeah, if you hadn't figured it out. I'm on Marquez in the rematch.
The only doubt that I could have is that Marquez is getting old, but I don't think that Diaz has the power to take Marquez out and as the first fight showed he cannot fight Marquez at a distance as Marquez is a sharp shooter and will pick him apart. Diaz thinks because he was winning the first few rounds handily, that he can perform that way for the entire fight. He's wrong and he was already fading in the first fight by the 7th round.
