Martinez vs Williams (10/20) This is a rematch of an incredible fight that happened about 11 months ago. Williams won in a controversial mixed decision. Many thinks that Martinez won the fight. Either way, the fight was very close.
In the original fight, both fighters only had 3 weeks to prepare for each other as Martinez was a fill in for Pavlik. Pavlik pulled out of the fight do to illnes. (does drinking count as an illness?)
Both of these guys have had full training camps for this fight and are well aware of what the other is capable of.
The odds offered on this fight are have remained steady at about even money. Some money has moved to Martinez in the last few days.
I've thought hard about this fight. I've watched the replay twice in the last week and have finally come to a conclusion.
Normally, I look hard to the counter puncher in rematches. The saying goes, once a counter puncher cracks the aggressors code they win the fight. I'm certain that Martinez has seem most of everything that Williams has to offer.
There are possible issues for Martinez in this fight. The WBC has a 30 day mandatory weigh in prior to the fight. Williams was nearly at weight but Martinez was 18 pounds. With 7 days to go, Martinez was 8 pounds over. The 8 pounds isn't necessarily excessive but at the final press conference, Martinez looked gaunt.
As fighters age, well as we all age, it becomes much more difficult to lose weight. I believe he may have had to spend far to much time losing weight for the fight then training for the fight. It also causes fighters to fade late in fights. Martinez, has a history of being in fantastic shape and has hardly ever faded in fights. He did look gassed out at the end of the first fight against Williams. They both where gassing but it seemed to me that Williams had a bit more left in the tank.
My feeling on this fight, is that Williams has more desire and heart and that will likely carry him to the win.
