Jason Day says there is a 50 per cent chance he will need sinus surgery but in the meantime he is sharing the lead in the US PGA Tour event in Philadelphia.
After carding a 4-under-par 66 in a first round blemished only by a three-putt bogey, Australia's youngest-ever PGA Tour winner revealed the extent of his chronic and long-lasting sinus infection.
"My left maxillary was full of liquid, but it's turned into a rocky form of hard liquid," Day said.
"Now I've got to take a lot of medicine, see how that goes. If I can't (cure it) that way, then we're going to go in surgically through the nose and suck all the stuff out.
"It's been going on for four months now, a long, long time.
"We're going to get it either way, either medically or surgically, and we'll be back to 100 per cent."
In retrospect, the 22-year-old Day is astonished he won the Byron Nelson Championship in Texas in May, despite suffering from the ailment.
"I can't believe I won, playing with that," he said.
"Some days I feel better than others. I was getting shaky at the end of today's round."
Day was part of a four-way tie for the lead with India's Arjun Atwal and Americans Joe Ogilvie and Nick Watney.
All four leaders played in the more benign morning conditions.
Aaron Baddeley was best of the other Australians on 69, while Robert Allenby shot a 70 in the afternoon, when a fluctuating breeze made birdies difficult to come by.
Allenby, however, made three in a row starting at the ninth hole only to give two strokes back at the par-four 12th, where he missed a putt from barely one foot, much to his own astonishment.
"It was just a mental blank, but overall I'm happy with my score," Allenby said.
Jason Day revealed over the weekend that he is battling a severe sinus infection that might force him to withdraw from the PGA Championship. Officially, the Aussie's maxillary sinus is "half-blocked." He had surgery scheduled for the offseason, but might go under the knife as soon as this week. "I don't know if I'm going to be able to play [in the PGA]," he said on Saturday following his third round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. "It depends on how things go [Sunday]. I felt pretty awful out there today, really shaky and light-headed and dizzy at times, because I'm on this new medication. I don't think I can play golf like this. I scraped it in today for a 69, which was a good score but it's just a struggle to get any air into my lungs. One day I'll be fine, next day I'll be awful. I just want to get it out of my system." Day closed with a 1-over-par 71 to finish T22. He has withdrawn from two PGA TOUR events in the last 17 months due to bronchitis and dizziness, which may or may not be related to his current malady. Charley Hoffman is the first alternate. 8/9/2010
