Just talked to Blair on the phone. His computer crapped out on him and so did his plane -- he's stuck in OK City. He asked me to put up a brief note (in his words).
I didn't spend much time watching the players hit on the range and it took me all day to walk the course, so take this with a grain of salt.
I haven't been there before, so I don't have a benchmark to compare with, but the rough certainly did not seem exceptionally deep, maybe about an inch and a half. The balls were plainly visible above the rough line. But it will certainly affect approach shots, especially with the new grooves. I was hoping to see more of Tiger, but didn't see much. There was one shot into 18, which looked a little shaky. He started on 10 and quit after 9 holes, so there wasn't much opportunity to watch if you weren't there from the start (and I wasn't). I have a few comments relative to Alf's previous posts.
Hunter Mahan looks very good. Watched him hit a few drives and he was really striking them.
Paul Casey looked fine.
John Senden looked pretty shaky.
A few other observations. Robert Allenby was hitting it great, but with him, the short game is always an issue. Jaidee looked shaky. Saw Rory McIlry hit one drive and he absolutely killed it. Rory spent a long time putting. Steve Marino didn't look good. VJ looked shaky. Henrick Spenson looked mediocre. Sabbatini looked relaxed, but I didn't see him hit much. Els looked good. Westwood looked sharp. Stricker is staying in a cabin on property (not sure if that's good or bad). Finally, I don't know if this will have any effect, but there was a huge amount of pollen in the air, everywhere. Nothing else comes to mind, other than that place is really something. If I get home in time, I'll try to add and elaborate, but it's looking like a long shot right now.
