Pacquaio vs Floyd hypothetical lines...
mayweather knows from his camp that Pacman is on performance enhancers and wants a fair fight. i dont think this is too much to ask for. Why would Pacman refuse to take a drug test within 24 days of the fight unless he was hiding something. My money would certainly be on floyd here and under in rounds. He would catch manny and put him on the canvas in my opinion. Boxing needs this fight in my opinion. MMA is getting huge and boxing has now taken a backseat. Last night got some good interest for a change. I also agree with someone else. I think Pacman would be a real slight favorite over mosely. maybe -140 or so. good discussion thru this thread though.
The only disagreement I have is the part about MMA over taking boxing. Yes it may seem that way in America, but it really isn't true even here. Forget worldwide, MMA isn't even a sport in half of the nations in the world. The PPV buys for Mayweather vs Mosley may reach 2 million. That is 5 to 7 UFC fights. UFC has done a wonderful job of selling themselves, but as I think we've seen boxing as a sport is adjusting. There is a 5 star fight almost every weekend for the next 2 months.
If there's a five star fight every weekend, I really don't know who most of these guys are? I'm not trying to sound ignorant, but in the 70s and 80s, even non sports fans knew who many of these fighters were. Those days are probably gone forever, as all I hear from younger guys is talk about MMA. I couldn't care less about UFC. I'll take your word that there are some very good fighters out there, but the public interest just doesn't exist. To get back some general public interest, not just boxing fans, they need to set up this fight. In a previous thread, someone called this matchup the "fight of the decade." Thru the 70s and 80s, there was a fight this interesting probably once a YEAR. Too bad boxing has lost much of its relevance, as I do prefer boxing to a brawl in a cage.

Yes the younger crowd especially the bar crowd focuses on MMA. Ever since promoters discovered PPV money was much better then TV money the public interest has waned. It isn't the quality of the fighters, if anything it has improved. It isn't like we are going to ever see another Ali/Frazier (1971) on TV again. The promoters and fighters make 1000's of times the amount of money going the PPV route so Public Broadcasting of Major fights is over. Young men love cock fighting and that is basically what MMA is. Don't get me wrong, I go out to watch many UFC events and enjoy the company of friends while hoping for KTFO (knocked the fuck out) type of punches. Usually doesn't happen. The advantages that UFC has is also one of its biggest problems. Its advantage is that it basically owns the fighters and can make them fight. The limitation is that they don't have that many good fighters and often are forcing out crap. UFC 115 headline fight is Lidell vs Franklin. It is a joke. People who pay for that card are dumb. The UFC is forced to rehash has beens over and over because they just don't have that much quality. Even their champions are a bit of a joke. Lesnar? HW champion and he's had 4 fights ever. The UFC's biggest draw is a former Pro Wrestler and when he loses to Carwin what happens then? Hard to promote Carwin to the masses. UFC/MMA will be around for decades but it will fade into the background just like any other fad sport. Boxing will always be there. It may not be dominant in America but it certainly is in most of the rest of the world. And for betting purposes boxing is a lot easier then MMA. GL Already making plans to go out for UFC113 even though the card is weak.

You make a good point regarding PPV. The problem is, if boxing stays pretty much PPV, then general interest in the sport will continue to decline. The top fighters and promoters are making more $$$ now, but the sport was much more interesting in the 70s and 80s. I'm not saying they should give their product away for free, but promoters have to find a way to expand boxing's fan base. Maybe they should let FOX or ABC rebroadcast yesterday's fight next weekend. Thirty years ago, they did this all the time. They get good $$$ for the live fight, and the general public gets to see it a week or two later. This is the sort of thing that builds your fan base IMO.
This is a business model the NFL uses with its network. The league is always replaying games, and I am sure they wouldn't do that if no one were watching. To a lesser degree the NHL and MLB networks do this, too.
I still don't think we have seen the best of Mayweather. Perhaps Pacquiao can bring that out of him. The counter punching that will go on will be something to watch. I favor Mayweather who has never been to the canvas and gets stronger as the fight progresses. Back in Nov '09 I played Mayweather at -102 and then 2 weeks later took back Pacquiao at +130. Mayweather has been -135 to -140 for almost 6 months and that seems to be the current consensus line. If they ever fight, I see Mayweather and the always heavy big money coming in on him. So, if you like him I'd bet him now and wait if you like Pacman.
mayweather likes to throw one two punch's and retreat, it worked against Mosley it won't against Pacquiao he'll have to fight. Mosley looked like he was on the take, he had a good round in the second then he just bobbed for nine rounds and when was the last time you seen two fighters hugging each other before the last round, smells fishy. There's going to be a ko alright and the one who is going to see stars will be the one dancing with stars.

Mayweather's style makes it really hard to fight that way as you are constantly eating counter punches, highly accurate and hard counter punches. Everyone that fights Mayweather has the plan of bum rushing him. It just doesn't work all that well. Pacquiao may try to go to the body more, but that leads to the counter over the top. Trust me, Pacquiao doesn't have a good chin at WW. His style of fighting leaves him wide open and there aren't many better and dismantling poor defensive fighters then Mayweather.
