If there's a five star fight every weekend, I really don't know who most of these guys are? I'm not trying to sound ignorant, but in the 70s and 80s, even non sports fans knew who many of these fighters were. Those days are probably gone forever, as all I hear from younger guys is talk about MMA. I couldn't care less about UFC. I'll take your word that there are some very good fighters out there, but the public interest just doesn't exist. To get back some general public interest, not just boxing fans, they need to set up this fight. In a previous thread, someone called this matchup the "fight of the decade." Thru the 70s and 80s, there was a fight this interesting probably once a YEAR. Too bad boxing has lost much of its relevance, as I do prefer boxing to a brawl in a cage.
The difficulty is defining public interest. Yes the younger crowd especially the bar crowd focuses on MMA. Ever since promoters discovered PPV money was much better then TV money the public interest has waned. It isn't the quality of the fighters, if anything it has improved. It isn't like we are going to ever see another Ali/Frazier (1971) on TV again. The promoters and fighters make 1000's of times the amount of money going the PPV route so Public Broadcasting of Major fights is over.
Young men love cock fighting and that is basically what MMA is. Don't get me wrong, I go out to watch many UFC events and enjoy the company of friends while hoping for KTFO (knocked the fuck out) type of punches. Usually doesn't happen.
The advantages that UFC has is also one of its biggest problems. Its advantage is that it basically owns the fighters and can make them fight. The limitation is that they don't have that many good fighters and often are forcing out crap. UFC 115 headline fight is Lidell vs Franklin. It is a joke. People who pay for that card are dumb. The UFC is forced to rehash has beens over and over because they just don't have that much quality. Even their champions are a bit of a joke. Lesnar? HW champion and he's had 4 fights ever. The UFC's biggest draw is a former Pro Wrestler and when he loses to Carwin what happens then? Hard to promote Carwin to the masses.
UFC/MMA will be around for decades but it will fade into the background just like any other fad sport. Boxing will always be there. It may not be dominant in America but it certainly is in most of the rest of the world. And for betting purposes boxing is a lot easier then MMA.

Already making plans to go out for UFC113 even though the card is weak.
