Shell Houston Open The Shell Houston Open is held at the Tournament Course at the Redstone Golf Club in Humble, TX. The par 72 layout measures 7,457 yards and for many Tour pros playing this week is a prep week for the Masters.
Having said that, I've had some very good weeks leading into the Masters primarily because I'm putting so much work into getting ready for the first major of the year.
I scan 53 golf websites just about everyday and was shocked to read this quote this morning from "hot" Ernie Els: "If I'm into contention (at Houston), it will be great, and if I'm not, that's also fine," Els said. "I just want to have a nice, easy week, play golf, and get ready for Augusta." Also, he is not using his regular caddy for the Masters for some reason. I don't like it.
Easy week? I'm not betting on Els this week nor against him he is putting too well.
The Shell Houston open will try to replicate the conditions of Augusta National with 13 feet on the Stimpmeter and shaved areas around the greens .
Fred Couples -115 vs. DJ Trahan
Yes, we lost a bet against Trahan and his bad back, but if he is going to play the Masters he'll have to go at it not at full speed. Couples is sharp, hot, won 3x in a row in the Champions Tour. The Houston Cougar golfer has won this event at Redstone.
Luke Donald -135 vs. Adam Scott
Donald is always bet early and often in golf matchups by the UK bettors. He ranks up there every year in Scoring Average and Ball Striking. This season Donald has been solid with a T6 in his last event the Transitions, prior to that T26, T9, T16 and a 2nd place finish at the Northern Trust Open.
Scott was T28 at the Transitions and that was his best 72 hole finish this season. Scott won here in '07 and has done little since. This line will surely go up.
Justin Leonard -130 vs. Chad Campbell
Two Texans squaring off in this matchup, but Campbell has shown very poor form since the Masters last year. I think he will use this event as a prep. He has missed the cut in three of his seven starts. Leonard was in the top 10 last year here at Redstone until the final round. He plays the tough courses well.
