I much prefer his earlier reports on the games when he spelled everything out (such as something Double Inside with the number of High Cards)!

If you can handle that "+" "-" notation stuff, good, but you do have another choice for playing strategy cards. You can get the strategy cards that are offered by Dan Paymar (those you can get through https://www.optimumplay.com and then from there go to the Cue Cards link).

I also encourage anyone who has any kind of interest in Video Poker to learn how to play it in the best possible manner. This can help a player cut down on their losses or even if they don't care whether they win or lose, this smart play helps to make it more likely that their money will drain away (if it does) at a slower rate than it could be.

David, very good information and key point about the players guides. I have two in my computer bag now that I travel with in case I suffer from insomnia. LOL

I was thinking specifically about the two books I mentioned as being good reads. Software from a reliable source, paid or free, is also a smart move. Knowledge won't displace short term luck but it will definitely pay off over time.

Dan

Yes, Dan, I do agree that the two books that you mentioned are good reads (since I do have and have read both of them), but from a playing strategy standpoint, both his and Dan Paymar's stuff are very good as well and Dan Paymar's stuff still offers good return without the squeezing of every last fraction of a Cent as possible (which Dancer's stuff does) -- which I do think Paymar's way makes the playing strategy even easier to deal with!

And yes, absolutely, just reading about this stuff without it being followed up by good practice is definitely not good enough. Absolutely good software that will tell players when they are making strategy errors is a huge key to all of this (learning proper play).

On that end, I recommend that (at least for those Players who prefer to go the Free route), players can now download for Free "Frugal Video Poker" from https://www.wolfvideopoker.com and another good and Free website to go to for this kind of stuff is at: https://www.vpgenius.com!

And definitely, the more knowledge we have, the better off we'll be and the more "fun" we can have!

I don't know what "DD VP book" means.

1. If GF likes VP, reading Dancer won't hurt.
2. Don't expect to repeat his wins or experiences.
3. Someone trying to sell you a car is unlikely to tell you that he loses money gambling, no matter whether he actually wins or loses. And lying to you about his wins won't void the sale of the car, because the lie is irrelevant.
I'm guessing that "DD VP book" in the thread title refers to Double Double Bonus Poker, could be wrong. It's a popular game, usually easy to find, very volatile, returns a little under 99% so not as good as many other games. I agree with everyone else on this thread, it's highly unlikely that the used car dealer has gotten rich playing VP, but proper play, plus finding appropriate cashback and promotions, can make for a cheap vacation and a lot of fun.

Personally, I really like Bob Dancer and Liam Daily's "Winner's Guide" series, I think they're about as comprehensive and authoritative as anything you can find, and you can get as accurate as you want to be if you dig into them. There are six volumes, I think they're Jacks or Better, Double Bonus, Full Pay Deuces, Not So Ugly Ducks, Pick-em and Double Double Bonus. I review them often.

I also agree with Rec, if you get into VP, you should spend some time with a trainer. Can't go wrong with the price of Frugal Video Poker (free), and there are plenty of others out there.

Good luck!
please recommend some VP software, both free and not too costly! Thanks in advance.

For free, you can't go wrong with Jim Wolf's "Frugal Video Poker". It's functional and accurate although the interface isn't very "pretty" or realistic.

There are a number of ones that you can buy and I have most. I prefer Bob Dancer's "Video Poker for Winners". A large variety of games and a built in RoR calculator that will give you real insight and perspective on how not to overplay your bankroll. Sleek interface....makes you feel like you're sitting in front of a real machine. The downside is that this is on the upper price end....$50 if I recall correctly.

I'm sure others will pipe in with their thoughts on specific software and in the end, as long as it represents accuracy as both of the above (along with others that will likely be recommeded) will, then it becomes a matter of personal preference.

Attempting to play solid vp strategy without a software trainer for any reaonable sum of money is a mistake IMO.

Dan
There's a freeware trainer out there called viPoker, it's pretty basic and has some problems, but I find it pretty functional.

Hey Group,

I just went to check out the Wolf Software website and it now does not post a direct link to the Free download of "Frugal Video Poker," but I did find a way to get to it. What you have to do to now get it is go to: https://wolfvideopoker.com/FVP.htm.

And so as I said, also https://www.vpgenius.com has some good and Free Video Poker training and general playing stuff, so check that out as well. Otherwise, for a program that you would have to pay for, I do think also that the program called "Optimum Video Poker" by Dan Paymar is good as well and it has versions for both PCs and Macs. And you should be able to get it for less than the normal list price by going to Dan Paymar's website at:
https://www.optimumplay.com (through his Orders link) or through the American Casino Guide's website through the Video Poker link.

Thanks everyone!! Some excellent info.

My girlfriend and I went to Barona Casino last Saturday with my parents. It was my mom's birthday and she insisted she would rather go eat the buffet and gamble at Barona, so I drove all four of us to the 30 minute away casino.

Right after the buffet my mom hit the penny machines and my girlfriend hit the VP machines. I was watching her play for about 20 minutes and was curious. I would hate to list her in the Vegas For All thread that says "Stupidest Gambleing seen" or whatever it's called, so I won't

Anyway, I saw her holding a pair, then a king I told her she should just hold the pair, that way she can have a better chance of hitting four of a kind. She said "ok". I didn't want to ask her if she knew what she was doing, because I didn't want to get into it with her. But anyway, even though I'm a newbie to VP, I thought I would school her on what I have learned so far. I forgot what she hit, but she won 140 quarters with a max bet of $1.25. Maybe a flush? I don't remember.

She had to have hit some kind of Four-Of-A-Kind because that would be paying at least 125 coins. And this is where good playing strategy comes in! It definitely can make the difference between a nothing hand and a paying hand.

You should explain to her that this is not table poker where there are other people playing with the same deck of cards and so other cards are no longer available to her whereas here with Video Poker, she has the other 47 cards (after the first five cards have been dealt out) available to be used as possibilities.

Oh and I forgot to add in that if you want to know where there is decent video poker and what the slot club returns, you can go to either
https://www.vpinsider.com which you have to pay for but I know that the information is good there or, for Free you can go to https://www.vpfree2.com (but I don't know how often that site is updated).
