I Threw Away a Royal

How often do you see this?

I was playing DDB. I was dealt As, Kh, 10h, 2c, 5c. I kept the As and drew the Jh, Qh and Ah. I played correct according to Winpoker.

Another time I was playing JoB and I was dealt the As, 10s. I kept the ace and was dealt the Ks, Qs, Js.

If you had held different cards, you would have drawn different cards and probably wouldn't have gotten a royal. Today's machines keep on shuffling until you hit the "draw" button. By holding more cards, you would have hit draw a second or so later, so your draw would be different.
The chance of a Royal Flush filling in when holding an Ace-10 suited is quite low and really in the whole scheme of things is not worth holding unless maybe there is a progressive jackpot and that amount is high enough for it to be worth it to hold it (I think that it might be at least 4,600 coins -- sorry, not $4,600 on a Quarter machine).

I'd say that if there is any chance that you might be going to a gaming area many many times over the years, mathematically you would be better off playing in the mathematically best possible way for each hand because that is more likely to keep you in the running and is more likely to enable you to play more hands which can give you more of a chance at the very least to hit something possibly nice. But even if you don't end up winning, smart play will make you more likely to play more hands (even if you are only playing for the sake of playing -- not playing for the sake of winning).

Oops, sorry for the double posting, but see above for a change I made!

Don't beat yourself up, the cards would have been different as Sue says. Thinking about what might have happened if you played different cards/different game/different machine is pointless. Hope you won!
I know the facts of life. However, I can not help but look at what cards come up and think what I would have had if I had played the hand differently. I guess I got in the habit when the machines held all 10 cards and have never been able to change since then.
Thanks.... I actually hit 2 royals last weekend in about 5 hours of play.

1 playing the 10 play quarter JoB machine at Hard Rock and 1 on the quarter BP multistrike at Orleans. The 10 play I was dealt 4 to the royal. The multistrike I held 2 cards and hit on the first line.

The last time I hit a royal was 2 years ago. I probably played 100 hours without one. Its funny how these things hit sometimes.
Never thrown one away or even come close.

When I'm playing multi-line, or higher denom?

I slow my machine down to the Slowest speed, and really LOOK before I press the buttons.
(notice I said Press, and Not Slap) lol

Machines that are SET at the Highest speed? I move. Hate those.
I'm Not going to play faster just cuz the Casino thinks I should.
That's a recipe for mistakes.

CLV, I too try to slow my play down when playing dollars...but it doesn't seem to work out that way. I calculated my play this last visit. All dollars and I averaged close to 600 hands an hour. Down from my normal 700, but not by that much.
Last trip I also thru away a royal (3 to a RF), but it was a no-brainer keeping the 2 aces.
Sounds like you slowed it down some Capt. and thats Good.
Yep, I slow down on dollars too! I'm in no hurry, and dont need to show off. lol
Besides, the way you were hitting the Aces.........I'd be holding the aces too!!!
