The other thing is by holding only the Ace you drew 4 cards which increases your odds of getting the 3 royals cards as compared to only getting to draw 3 cards had you actually held the royal draw.

My wife did that once at the Lakeside at Lake Tahoe. Playing quarter VP at the bar with a progessive in excess of 1.7K she held a pair of Jacks one a club and pitched the Ace of clubs. Of course she drew the rest of the club royal cards. She made the proper play so she had to move on but she still brings it up occasionally. In reverse my brother-in-law playing DDB kept three to the royal and pitched a pair of sevens (wrong play). Of course he drew the other two sevens. You should have heard him cry. If you make the right hold there is nothing to be sorry about. My old saying is if I had a couple of hours in which I know what cards I would draw we would become very rich and retire early.

.... Meaning that it WILL happen, to everyone who plays long enough, and does discard the ten.

If the memory is really bugging you, simply go through the calculation of how much you'll lose holding that ten every time until the next time the faces come. Then think about whether you prefer money and a "bad beat" story, or no money and a "bad royal" story.

You may have made the correct play but that doesn't make the experience any less frustrating. Obviosuly the VP gods were f-ing with you.
