There may be jurisdictions where this info is publicly available, but in Nevada you have no way of knowing. Casinos keep that info secret.

Note that, unlike video poker machines, whose payouts are eminently knowable and calculable, the payout of slots is entirely opaque.

Unless you can find a casino insider to tell you the payoff of a particular machine, you'll never know.
Speaking strictly about the top award, here are a few for you:

Double Diamond (3 coin): 1 in 46,656 for the 2,500 coin top award

Triple Diamond (3 coin): 1 in 93,312 (most games with a 4,000 coin top award) (some have odds as long as 1 in 16,777,216 (ouch), but wouldn't be commonly used)

10 Times Pay (3 coin): 1 in 1,728,000 for the 25,000 coin top award

Sizzling 7 (3 coin buy-a-pay): 1 in 4,096 (most common paytable) for the 1,000 coin top award

Please understand that these numbers are average numbers of pulls to hit the jackpot. In Nevada (and other regulated jurisdictions), the outcome of every spin is random, and the results of the previous spins have zero impact on the next spin. For example, if a Sizzling 7 machine hasn't hit the jackpot in the past 10,000 spins, it's not "due" to hit the jackpot any more than the machine next to it. By the same token, if a machine just hit a jackpot, it's not any less likely to hit one again soon.

Fortunately, every year (I think for a while now), Steve Bourie has been listing machine ranges of payout percentages in each year's American Casino Guide.

The OP's wife asked "How often do jackpots on regular slots payoff?"

ACG doesn't address jackpot rates.

Although the ACG does not discuss when exactly jackpots come up, it does show the long-term return (based on what the manufacturer offers the casinos in terms of possible return rates) of a whole bunch of different games and I think that from that (although the jackpot is never guaranteed to happen necessarily at any time), people might be able to extrapolate the possible likelihood of hits could come from the machine based on how high the game's listed return is (although it wouldn't be known what the specific payoffs came from).

And so yes, I certainly do not know of any source that would let people know how often anything on a slot machine can hit (since there can be any number of stops set up in a game and the manufacturer can figure out how many of these stops can be set up for each different game).

I don't know that a company would want the public to know such kind of information.

Not often.

Thanks to all for your inputs. We'll be heading to Vegas on the 24th and we'll be trying to beat the odds LOL..........Tom
