Learning video poker

I have always been a pretty casual player but want to learn more about playing "correctly".

There are so many books available it is somewhat overwhelming.

Do people have opinions on a "best" book to learn how to read pay tables and learn when and what cards to hold and why?

There are some computer programs out there that are set up for teach correct play.  I imagine a number of posters will provide more than enough information to set you on the right path.

Download the winpoker app on your tablet.    It has pay schedules for every game and dings you when you play your hand incorrectly

Thank you for the recommendation. Is that available for Android? I didn't see it on the playstore and with a Google search I only saw an Apple version and a Windows version.

I bought Video Poker Wizard about 5 years ago for my iPad.  Great app, has about 17 or 18 different games.  Don't know if it's still available though.

I'm a fan of Bob Dancer's Winner's Guides, they're well written with minimal fluff and are a great place to start and to advance to higher levels; the strategies presented are solid.  Start with his Winner's Guide to 9/6 Jacks or Better.  You should be able to find all of his guides online (not sure if he has a website, but I often buy used books at bookfinder.com).

I also use Win Poker.  I find it very helpful.  Take care PJ.

For practice I have the "Video Poker Wizard" app on my android phone. I think it's by The Wizard of Odds and it costs $1.99.

I've found some inaccuracies in the app, so I use the Bob Dancer strategy cards with it. I also use WinPoker on my PC.

For theory the Bob Dancer books are how I learned a couple of decades ago.

DECADES, oh my.

I would second this recommendation.  When I got into VP more seriously, I downloaded WinPoker. I developed a habit of playing 100 hands every night.  It has numerous games, although I started with J or Better.   I got so I made very, very few errors.  Eventually I found I like Double Bonus much better.   It is quite a bit more challenging, but I play it almost exclusively and gradually eliminated the vast majority of errors.  Much better than reading a book or using charts, in my opinion.

Also, games like JOB play pretty intuitively and the cost of errors is small. Play Double Bonus intuitively and you'll get your clock cleaned.

The value of charts is that you can take them into the casino and use them to check your play:s accuracy, while if you use your phone for that, they'll stuff you into a trash compactor.
