Platinum Card & Tax Question.

Downstream Casino has made me a Platinum Card holder.  Not sure how many, I've heard Less than 30 members.  It's invitation only.  The directors vote on who gets Platinum.  Input and feedback is taken from all departments, restaurants, gaming, hotel staff etc.  If you have any negative or questionable behavior reported, no Platinum card for you.  I was told a couple of years ago, I was denied because I was wearing shirts with other casinos logos.  It's just not the amount of play you give em.

The day the head Host gave me my card,  she also gave me $250 in free play.  That is in additon to $420 in free play I had received for the 2 day stay for being a Gold card.  This casino is heads above any of the other casinos in Oklahoma.  Las Vegas casinos have never treated me as good as the Downstream.

I'm invited to the Platinum VIP party this month.  One of the dawings is $2,500 in free play,  I'm told that everyone will receive something.

As a side note.  My profit/loss statement shows a net loss of $4,000 in the Pit.  That is incorrect,  my actual loss is around $20,000.  I was planning on offsetting my reportable winnings with my losses.  To make matters worse, slots show a net win of $7,000.  I have two other casinos to get profit/loss.  Hopefully, they will be more accurate.  The motivation for us to purchase a new home and to take on a house payment, and to pay down the mortage points was so we could itemize this year.  Our CPA could not offset the reportable winnings last year with the losses because we had to use the standard deduction.  We ended up having to pay a penalty for not withholding enough and this year to pay quarterly estimated tax.

Question to all,  The new Standard deduction for 2018 is $24,000 for couples.  To offset your winnings, you must itemize.  that is going cause a tax burden for gamblers.  Any advise?

Yes the new Standard deduction will limit a lot of people from itemizing deductions. It's terrible that you have to count gambling winnings as income while not being able to offset it with your losses if you don't itemize. Taking away our personal exemptions also hurts the elderly and disabled to a greater extent than others.
