Maybe this happens all the time for you all.... but it was a new experience for me...
Today at the four Boyd casinos (Orleans, Gold Coast, Sam's Town, Suncoast) they had drawings to give away about $220K left from their June/July Wednesday kiosk swipe giveaway promotions. 5 drawings starting at Noon with 11 players randomly selected as winners. The 11 players picked from 11 envelopes - 10 of them had $500 and one had $5000 at each drawing - first name drawn picks first and so on.
Time for the noon drawing, 11 names picked - 6 don't show. They pick 6 more - 3 don't show. They pick 3 more - 2 don't show. They pick 2 more.... and one of them is me! Cool! Ha! Lucky me!
There are 9 players ready to pick envelopes in front of me. I am STOKED to win $500. WOOHOO! I turn to lucky player #11 and joke (ok, only half-joke) that if the $5K is still on the board when it gets down to the two of us that we should split $5500.
Player after player pick... after 6 of them all pick $500 I re-offer the split to player #11. He's not jumping at it.
Player 7 picks... $500. The crowd murmurs...
Player 8 picks... $500. The crowd gets louder
Oh **** please don't make me make me pick from two envelopes for $5000. I'm an AP not a gambler! I turn to player 11 and say "Last chance... split the $5500, winner takes an extra 10% for the taxes." He doesn't say yes... and player 9 is opening the envelope....
$500. The crowd howls...
Oh dear. If I pick the wrong envelope I will never be so sad to win $500 (funny how perspective can change, isn't it?!)...
As I walk up to the gallows... uh... stage... I know one thing for certain, I'm not going to choose. Luck got me here, luck has to pick the envelope. I reach in to my pocket and pull out a quarter.
I tell the MC - heads is the first envelope, tails is the second. He announces that I'm flipping a coin for it, and the crowd loves the action... I flip it high, it bounces on the stage "Oh, no please don't fall of the stage" and comes to rest.
Its heads.
The MC opens the envelope and the slowly opens the card inside...
