Strange Hand Payout

My brother was gambling in AC (Harrah's) & hit a large jackpot. The slot attendent came to him and asked, "You want CASH MONEY or LEAVE CREDITS ON MACHINE", that is the direct quote from the slot attendent.

I could only think that Harrahs would prefer someone to leave the credits on the machine and hope  the player gives the $$$ back to the casino.

My brother said, I will take the "CASH MONEY".  After being paid he ordered an adult beverage & put the jackpot in his room safe and quit gambling.

Could he have avoided the W-2G if he left some money on the machine?

NO, the W-2G came with his cash.

I saw a lady hit the top jackpot, around $13,000, on a Dragon Link...she had filled in all the spaces.  I saw her being paid but didn't observe counting of the money, etc.  Later I saw that she had something like $2500 in credits showing, hadn't seen her win big enough to have that showing without a hand pay.  Maybe she chose to take some of her jackpot in cash and have $2500 left as credits to continue playing.  Didn't know you could do that, but maybe so.

I know it comes with the cash. I thought maybe if he took under $1200 cash and left the rest on the machine they wouldn't do the W-2G. Never heard of this option before.
