If your OS is Windows, you get "stealth" updates in addition to the ones where you get interrupted and forced to restart your computer. Either type of update has the potential to screw up your OS's relationship with your browser. I would suspect that one such recent "improvement" has an incompatibility with your VPW software.
I got sick of that shit happening after a while, so I installed a DOS emulator. It basically reconfigures my start screen and desktop to imitate Windows 7. That allows me to run older programs without hassle. It's called Dos Shell and is available as freeware.
A related problem that was solved by doing that is that Firefox is my default browser, since I got tired of Microslop Voyeur groping my computer every time I used it (which often slowed things down to a crawl, privacy issues aside). Probably because Microslop resents such attempts to fight their global dominance, a LOT of stuff wouldn't work with Firefox---until I installed Dos Shell.
