NHL new rules = increased scoring

NHL new rules = increased scoring Totals guy Charlie J had some thoughts on the NHL totals: > In an attempt to increase scoring, the NHL has made significant rule changes. They have reduced the size of the goalie’s pads. They have made the net more rectangular and shrunk the depth of the net. This is great for setting up plays from behind the net (ala’ Gretzky). There is more room behind the net and the more rectangular net increases the chances of a wrap-around goal and requires the goalie to adjust his former style of guarding the corners of the goal. Finally, the NHLPA officially allowed “hybrid icing” yesterday and the new rule will be in effect immediately. In my opinion, very shortly we will start to see totals set at 6.0 or increased juice on the over 5.5’s. If my theory is correct, scoring should increase by nearly a half goal per game this season.
Watch for stories (or even just watch film) of goalies as they make adjustments. They won't all make them at the same time, which means generic adjustments to the lines based on season stats will result in some goalies becoming "under goalies." The dynamic reminds me of how an increasing number of NFL teams defer when winning the coin toss. Also, keep this in mind for Vezina futures. Younger goalies (more likely to be able to make adjustments) may be undervalued.
