Tournaments with Tricks

Jimmy Wilke who was always a friend of casino tournament players, which cannot be said for anyone that I am aware of in recent years, started the "Wild Card Drawings" during tournaments. Having a cordial relationship with Jimmy, we shared thoughts and ideas on improving tournaments and keeping them open to all.

The Wild Card was born when Jimmy noticed everyone left the casino after being eliminated from the tournament. The Wild Card kept the players around. It also kept the novice player in the game as he or she could recover from bad play or mistakes by having their name drawn back into the tournament.

Most skilled players hate "Wild Cards" and Mulligan’s. I know I do. Nevertheless, when you want to play in tournaments without having to gamble your lungs out for 4 hours a day at casinos that host them, you get into bed with the casinos and then try to figure out a way to twist the tricks into your favor.

Remember Jimmy was the one who started the Hilton Million Dollar Blackjack Tournament that barred no player because they were skilled. There were to my knowledge only two players who were not allowed to play in the Hilton's Million Dollar tournament and that was for reasons other than being an advantage player.

The reason I started this thread was that on Sunday I might have seen something that is almost impossible to accomplish at a tournament that has tricks attached to it.

By tricks I mean " Mulligan’s" and Double Up Chips where a player can use their Mulligan or Double up chip to change a card in Blackjack tournaments or use the Mulligan to completed a straight flush in 3 card poker tournaments and in Pai Gow Tournaments. In dice tournaments, the double up chip allows you to double one winning bet anytime during the round. It is almost impossible to win a tournament without one of these tricks.

These tricks were first put in by the casino to level the playing field for all players. Because Tournament playing is a skilled game that allows skilled players to have an advantage over the novice player. However, over the years the skilled player has taken the detours that the casino have put in the road to hamper the skilled player and used them to actually make it even harder for the novice players who are not using these tricks to a 100% result.

These double up chips and mulligans are used to its max value by skilled players and are often played poorly by the novice player.

However, on Sunday at the Hilton Dice Tournament a woman who had not purchased her Double Up chip and was eliminated in her first round was wild carded to the final table. She then without a Double Up Chip wound up winning the tournament and its first place prize of $50,000.

Therefore, where there is a will there is a way. However, do not count on this happing anytime soon in the near future, as this was a long shot that brought a smile to the casino suits at the Las Vegas Hilton this past Sunday.

If you would like to add your thoughts or comments on these casinos tournament tricks, please feel free to as many tournament players read this board.

My wife and I played in that tournament and we both purchase a mulligan. I think we use the most powerful way of betting it, witch must dramatically increase our odds verses the field. We did stay for the wild card drawing but did not watch the final table. I make it a point to be there for the drawings because I had my name drawn for the final table 2 years ago in the blackjack tournament. I played very aggressive going for first place ( $50,000 ) but busted out in 6th ( 3,000 ). The only reason I hung around that time was I lost my shirt the night before at binions during a prolonged very positive count. I sat in the ballroom all day that sunday reading a book taking a break from gambling, and almost hit the floor when I heard my name.
Yes Andrew the POWER of the wild card can not be taken with a grain of salt. It crumbles the best laid plans of skilled tournament players. That why the casino suits put it in.

Personally, I don't like many of the tricked up carnival rules but will make the best of them by trying to turn them in my favor if they can be swung into a strategic advantage (like Mulligans). Since the BJT world cannot seem to agree on any generally accepted playing rules, we are either stuck living with it or not playing at all.

What frosts my cookies is preferential treatment given to certain casino-favored players such as an automatic bye into deeper rounds or stuffing the wild card draw entry bin. If this kind of favoritism is earned as a bonus thru play in the tournament itself, that's one thing, but when it is granted simply because of a player's status with the casino or being the TD's buddy then it's blatantly unfair - bordering on outright cheating.

The more wrinkles, the more opportunity for the novice to make mistakes. Just let me know and I will figure out the strategy.
