Best Place to Play Downtown for Beginners and Low Stakes

My 23 yr old son will be staying downtown at the Golden Nugget in December and he loves to play poker but has only played live poker in a casino a few times. Where would be the best place for him to play downtown at low stakes?
Probably the buy in tournaments at Binions or the new poker room at the Plaza

Binions offers a 2-4 limit game that pretty much goes from 9AM to around midnight everyday.

If he is going to be in town for a while Binions pays players for playing in their cash games. Up to $900 for 125 hrs during the month. They have different levels of time with the lowest being 25 hrs I believe gets $50 in cash + $2 per hour in comp dollars.

Is Binions doing better? Its a beautiful room but I have never found good action there. Even on weekends it has been all but dead.

The best games I have found downtown have been at the Golden Nugget. The comps are almost non-existent but the action has always been great. Just the right mix of tourist' and locals.

I usually play the no-limit game. Blinds are 1-2 $100 min. buy in, no max. Most serious players seem to buy in for around $500 but $100 to $200 is common too. Drunk tourist on the weekends can make for some really great games. The locals are easy to read and the wanabes among them are easily frustrated.

There are always several limit tables going and the action seems to have a positive expectation.

I will be out there This weekend (11/22-11/27) I will definitely make it downtown for poker at least one night. I will also try to have a look at the Plaza's poker room. Havent seen the new incarnation yet.

Yes Cowboy with the current promotion going on at Binions there is always at least one table of 1-2 No Limit a lot of times 2 tables and there are multiple 2-4 limit tables going on most of the day into late evening. I will be there a lot over the days you will be in Las Vegas as I'm putting in 125 hours and receiving $900 in cash and $250 in comp dollars. When you come in just ask the staff if Joe P is in the room and stop by to say hello. I usually start play in the late afternoons to early evening and close the room most nights.

Then we can talk in detail about the UB fiasco. It will be a pleasure to meet you.

That sounds like a pretty good promotion. If I can get away from the family enough I could probably put in about 40 to 50 hours while I'm there. What kind of comps could I be looking at?
50 hours Cowboy will get you $100 in comps which will more than cover a dinner for 2 at their Steak House which is pretty good.

Thanks everyone. I will pass this info on to my son.
Last post was 11/29/13! I want to ask the same questons? Only updated info, where are the best games & poker tournaments. Where does the house take the smallest rake for tournaments and live games. Would consider going down the strip if the games are better. Going to Vegas the last part of March. Thanks Chippster 99
By the way staying at the Golden Nugget. Thanks
