I needed gas this weekend so I pulled into my local Speedway with a posted price @ $4.069. When I got to the pump it read $3.999. I’m not upset about the price drop and I did see a guy going out with numbers for their sign as I filled up, but I got to thinkin’; what other commodity do consumers purchase with a price that goes out to three decimal points?
I realize the marketing philosophy that 3.99 appears less that 4.00 but I think most people have been getting hosed long enough that we should drop the third place past the decimal point and call the price only in dollars and cents; (two decimal points).
When I was a wee lad one of my friend’s dad asked for ten gallons of gas. The attendant came back to the window to collect the “rounded” total and the dad refused to pay the additional penny. The poor pump jockey was a little dismayed but took the payment and walked away shaking his head. The dad sent letters to big oil protesting the .9 of a cent posted price but you can imagine the response he received from the petroleum industry PR dudes.
Next time the guy fills my tank I’m not going to pay the rounded up price either……….wait a minute, I’m the guy filling the tank………Never Mind!!!! Protest postponed.
