amtrak

I was at a friend's house. Another friend was over who travels often on Amtrak. She's gone all over the country. She says she tips a couple of dollars a day and can't believe someone tips $20 a day.

TB, $20 a day does seem high but...

There were 3 of us and my wife always carries
more luggage than anyone ( including me) would believe.

The porter kept it under his supervision except for a couple bags we had in our room.

Heck, I give $10 to a porter for just taking our luggage down a flight of stairs to the train whenever we travel to London via Gatwick, instead of arriving at Heathrow.

It's worth $10 just to see the guy carry 6 bags
all by himself. BTW, none are mine or my son
if he is along. They all belong to the queen in our little group.

If we traveled by train on multiple days, I would not tip $20 a day. Probably $10.

However, a one-day or two-day trip is different.

Anyway, money is not worth as much as it used to be. LOL

I think you raise the relevant issues. It's a little more complicated than $X per day.
I'm a very low maintenance person, so I'd probably go with a few dollars a day -- which is what I tip housekeeping.
